Well, the racers took “bikepacking” didn’t they? I hated saying it anyways, so the clock-watchers can have it…
I don’t know how much this carries to the world at large, if you look at Reddit, r/bikepacking seems to be 80% people on gravel bikes using bikepacking bags to do credit card or 3-season road touring. For many, 50%+ of the time will be on roads, they just use the saddle / frame / handlebar / fork 3-bolt bags on wide range 1x drivetrains.
For normies, ‘touring’ seems to have narrowed to ‘carrying 50 kilos of stuff in traditional panniers’.
I think we’re in a bubble because we read Radavist / Bikepacking. For people who will never buy a brand beyond Topeak or Zéfal, it’s a more global term.

yeah i dunno how much i buy that “bikepacking” only encompasses racing. it’s kind of like saying that “running” only encompasses running races.

Different strokes. I don’t feel dirt touring just means 4 big panniers on curly bars & 700x35..ymmv.
yup no matter how much prollyvist whinges about it, in the bike community at large “bikepacking” is “going camping with my bike” and poopbarn racing is “wait that’s a thing?”

Taking a tour from location to location (type not specified) via some sort of planned route - bike touring?
All bikepacking is bike touring, but not all bike touring is bikepacking?

Sounds reasonable to me, but…
Prolly is the problem, surprise surprise, to him it’s competitive or bust.
Logan from Pukebacking proposes it’s the more dirt-centric term.
The unwashed masses give a collective yawn, ride their Canyon/Apidura setups on paved & gravel roads to campsites or hotels, and call it bikepacking. Because it sounds cooler than touring. Touring is for dads wearing white socks with sandals and mirrors on their helmets.

The event organizers are all crapping their pants now because of the risks of sleep deprived riders. They are starting to bring in mandatory break times, according to dot.comm podcast which has to be the boringingist podcast I have ever heard.
Scott Morris who invented dot-tracking has been in a few IG posts recently. I have not watched ANY of them but I wonder if hes asking himself what hes started.
Bikepacking does not equate to racing over here.

So I am the local decisionmaker for my long distance corndog connoisseur club and everyone I talk to tells me about this guy who lives in my area and is apparently the BMOC of long distance corndog connoisseurs.
The national admin reached out and said “hey we want you to write us a 100k pop for the day of the big handmade bike show”
I’m like bet
So I sent a group mail to the people I am trying to empower to take over the club when I feel like dying and one dude was like
“OH YOU SHOULD REACH OUT TO BMOC! HE IS A MADE GUY”
I’m like ok is he like in the organization or is he a presenter?
“Well he makes bikes and is also a rando”

Dude has been to 2 events in our region and (I organized those events).
When dude showed up he spent the start time with his 2 other bros (I’d never seen before) and (their gfs or a driver?) and didn’t really socialize with the “club”
This weekend I’m out regretting my life decisions in the middle of a 200k I am way underfit for and I go into a cute lil cafe. Outside there are 2 “pukebacking” bikes with all the gear and fresh bartape and brand new tires. It’s obvious who these folks are when I get in there because they’re wearing stretchy pants and cycling caps ok.
Place isn’t small but I hate people so I sit on the corner of the bar not close but close enough to the bikey people for the proprietor to come over and ask if there was a bike event going on. They were like “no” and looked over at me and I was like “yeah, there’s a 200k today”

Anyway all these people are telling me I NEED to know this guy
So because connoisseurs are nerds there’s all kinds of receipts
I look up dudes history and he’s done a couple series and a couple GRs but in the last 10 years he’s <10k kms in events.
I looked further and this dude was touted as “completing 1200 Km (750 miles) Paris-Brest-Paris in 48hours of moving time” on prollyblog which is not a metric anyone really measures.
Anyway I wish the guy well
