Bike blog thread

Dunno about the disc-specific version, but I can confirm that the canti frame does plane acceptably without being noodly, and, in that regard, is not terrible for longer days in the saddle.

In fact, it might even be laterally stiff but vertically compliant

Is there anyone who wants to get a warning on dentist forums for lulz?

Bike industry is OVER, food industry is the future.

TC: I would love to be at a spot in the ā€œfood industryā€ where I could justify spending time making ā€œknife checkā€ videos.

Interesting news about Ibex. I was kinda bummed about them going out of business. They definitely have the best quality wool in the field even though the prices are usually cost prohibitive. Putting on an ibex shirt makes you realize that Rapha wool is total garbage.

I had no idea that Ibex was closing up, and now I see that everything Ibex is discontinued on QBP and was like 30% below wholesale. Of course, everything good is already gone.

I wonder how on earth they went out of business with those high prices and relatively strong brand image of quality. Maybe he prices were too high?

Read a little more, looks like they moved to a direct sales model and pissed off their traditional dealers, who maybe dropped the line. A strategic move most likely taken at the behest of venture capital (even if the CEO swears up and down it wasn’t venture who made the call) who most assuredly pushed for it as a way to increase their margins by cutting the middlemen.

Also the stuff was too expensive for the small specialty shop to carry a lot of stock on — low turns in what I assume is an already low turn business — so the customers turned online of their own accord.

Interesting study on how not to do it.

I did feel like there were perpetual sales and clearances going on for Ibex stuff in the past year or two. A couple of times, the regular discounts were bigger than my pro deal with them. Even at pro deal prices, Ibex is still expensive as fuck, but the amount of use I get out of my thick wool quarter-zip sweater is absurd. I wear it almost all the time.

Anecdotally, thin-weave Smartwool outlasts the other brands. I’ve had a baselayer L/S from them for 7 years and the cuffs are looking gnarly, but it’s holding together and still looks fine by itself.

fun fact about smartwool- no lifetime warranty but they do have a lifetime ā€œsatisfaction guaranteeā€. if you aren’t satisfied because you wore through some socks, they will replace them.

Doug is good at business.

I’ve been wearing an Ibex merino jersy as my main thermal layer of my winter stuff for at leas five years and it’s probably the best piece of clothing I’ve ever owned. Sadly, the zipper is on its last legs because the fabric itself is still going strong.

Easy to get a new zipper sewn in, though.

I’ve rescued zippers with a toothpick and very lightly applied chain lube.

That’s a shame. I love my arm warmers and my full-zip jersey. I never did get to try those wool 3/4 bibs. I don’t trust the pad but they looked interesting.

The pad is great atmo.
There’s still time if you wear S or L!

I have the older ibex bibs but never wear them because its literally impossible to pee without completely disrobing. Legs way too tight and front end is almost nipple height. Material and butt pad are kinda nice tho… but peeing is deal breaker.

I waited too long and missed the XL knicker availability by a day. Did snag some shorts, though. They do sit kind of high for me too, but I can awkwardly pee by hunching my shoulders around.

Re: bib peeing, I’ve got a pair of older bib tights that have a little 4" front zipper. Totally useful and not obtrusive at all. Wish more manufacturers would do that.

In news that is vaguely relevant to this thread, it looks like Mike picked a contest winner. MUSA MUSA ANO ANO.

Pure gold:

Heh, I posted that. Can’t claim all the credit, came from a Slack group @hobocross started.
