Chainline with Phil Wood and Sugino 75s?

get out of here.
.5mm is huge.

edit: actaully on my road bike i was trying to figure out if i should just run some cranks with a 111mm BB instead of the proper 102mm…i ordered a cheapie BB in 102mm…4.5mm isn’t that big either.

Might as well ask here: what bottom bracket for Superbe Pro cranks? Sugino 103mm?

for track i’ll bet it’s 109.

if you can afford Superbe Pro cranks, you can afford to track down a Superbe Pro bottom bracket. you can get by with a Sugino 75 or other NJS bb, but the taper on Superbe Pros is a bit different from NJS/ISO or JIS.

edit: if you don’t have this page bookmarked, you really should. it’ll save a lot of questions & headaches.

Chainline for high flange fixed/fixed Phil hubs and Cobra cogs is 1.64 inches or 41.656 mm (I just measured it, center to center on the cogs). If you go with 75s on the Phil 108.5 bottom bracket the chainline can be adjusted to perfection.

The Phil bb is pretty spendy. I hear White has a new bb that will fit the 75’s taper at around 75 to 80 bucks.

I hope this helps.

It’s actually a Superbe Pro road crank, or rather, we think it is. It looks identical to the track crank except for inner ring tabs. I’m making the assumption that the outer ring position is going to give me the exact same chainline.

Right now it’s hanging on a Shimano bottom bracket. Is this a bad idea? I didn’t know it wasn’t JIS.

mismatching tapers isn’t catastrophic, as long as you’re not going back and forth all the time. the last pair of Superbe Pros i had didn’t really give me a good chainline til i got one of the Superbe Pro cartridge BB’s, they’re actually labeled “Superbe Taper”, and after a bit of research, i found that the Superbe taper is close to, but not exactly, ISO. honestly, tho, i say use whatever works. if the Shimano bb gives you a decent chainline, run with it.

the thing to be concerned with is using a smaller taper, like ISO or superbe taper on the larger JIS taper (most shimano and sugino cranks).
it’s probably even ok as long as you don’t overtighten your crank bolts. if you do though and try to use the proper taper next time you might be a little disappointed.

108$ at ben’s

WELCOME to tarckbike :bear:

Dang, that’s what my memory gets me. Sorry about that.

ben’s is always expensive, i bet you can find it cheaper.

I actually just acquired that BB…

Very interesting info. I didn’t know about the taper being different on Superbe Pro cranks. Always had my cranks with Hatta’s and never noticed any problems. Superbe Pro BBs are non-existent out here so I might have to look Stateside for some.
Is this the same for both models (early Campy style/later style) of the Superbe Pro track cranks?

as far as i know, yes. i had a pair of Superbes (fluted Campy style) and a pair of Superbe Pros on the same bottom bracket, one of the Superbe Pro cartridge ones. a nice bottom bracket, incidentally, and the road version can be flipped to give you a decnt chainline with a set of track cranks.

Maybe just do ISO?

Yes yes, the Phil bb is spendy, but dude it’s adjustable. Best money I’ve put into my bike.
