OK I see what you’re saying. I still disagree. goalies go around the back of the net all the time (plus b-roll’s video clip evidence).
During the off-season, can athletes still practice using the same equipment they do in winter? Every sport requires specialized non-winter equipment, both for the athletes and for snow or ice production. The ONLY thing that can be done pretty much exactly the same with the same equipment, completely divorced from the need of sliding, is the shooting half of biathlon.
Edit: anyhow this is silly but interesting argument. I welcome the addition of other winter sports that are about traction or other ways of moving across ice or snow.
To make this argument even sillier, nordic skiers and skaters should get credit for non-slidyness for 50% of their time. One foot has to be pushing off in each stride cycle, otherwise they’re going nowhere.
not on the downhills
i really enjoy stupid arguments so this has been very entertaining for me
And I suppose on level ground at cruising speed, there is a portion of a classic stride where both feet are gliding. So Nordic skiing may be more like 30% non-slidy. That still puts biathlon in pretty good position in the non-sliding ranking.
Now curling is an interesting one to evaluate in the framework. The brushing is all about controlling the sliding stone by modifying the sliding surface, rather than directly controlling one’s sliding like with ski/skate/sled blades. But the players are also sliding.
What property functionally separates snow/ice from other surfaces that can also be exploited for sport? Anything other thing than promoting sliding?
Winter Olympic sports must take advantage of snow/ice
→
Snow/ice is only good for sliding
→
All winter Olympic sports have significant sliding components, otherwise they could be summer sports.
Now we’re getting somewhere!
Are dirt sports all about traction?
So much fucking traction!
If we define sliding as like friction coefficient then both summer and winter sports are all about it. And then we can take it back to having the forces of gravity being exerted on athletes in common. Turns out all sports are the same.
While the charter says the sport must be played on snow/ice, I think you have to look at it from the social point of view. These sports and olympics were clearly created to cater to countries with a significant amount of cold weather. CX really only caters to like Belgium. Prolly doesn’t have a chance. Depends how strong the leverage of international cycling bodies is on the Olympic committee or committees?
Some pretty awesome actual winter sports to choose from here:
Ice canoeing? Snow volleyball? Competitive snowball fighting?!
into this
In terms of the relevant ice physics, sintering plays a greater role than sliding in this one.
You might say we’ve met our Waterloo…
Walmart did a hostile takeover of their calendar spot?

ETA: They lost it to Waterloo the week before or Fayetteville the same week?
Fayettveville.
USA Cycling already had their directors scheduling meeting and everything was agreed upon and the calendar was submitted to the UCI. Flanders Classics (whom runs the World Cup) comes in and says FU we are taking that weekend.
Also, wonder what this means for the USCX series?

First race this weekend.
Flat and fast. Also an afternoon/evening race on a day when the high is supposed to be 80. Gonna be a hot one. Luckily my first race is only 30 min in the heat of the day. Second is closer to sunset.
I was reminded last night that the race is Saturday and not Sunday like it usually is. That would have been embarrassing.
Smoke rolled in today.
I’m probably bailing on the race tomorrow
PNW CX rules, bro. Lung cancer is a course feature.
I totally bailed. Visibility is like 2 miles. It’s shitty out here.
