I think it’s more like steak fries- it’s just bigger cut slab trails.

My brother typically packs steaks for his first night camping. He just cooks them in the coals of the fire. Right in the coals.

I don’t really eat or like steak but it seems to be a good party trick.

I’ve been watching A LOT of backpacking/camping videos. Lots of people make a big deal about cooking steak while camping. Most of those people also make a big deal about the 10mi, 1000ft vertical hike that they did from the car to the campsite.

Trail steak makes me think of what my shins would look like if any of those beartrap pedals got me

steak is great for car camping where you already are bringing cast iron. I like to get something thick, sous vide ahead of time, and bring it cooked but chilled in the cooler to sear and finish.

For car camping, we always bring sausages and Trader Joe’s potato and green bean frozen side. One pan and super easy/quick to make for a family of three.

Steak sounds good, too. We’ll do that when things waves arms around clear up.

I don’t see what this has to do with trail steak. Stay on topic Rudy!

I’ve been vegetarian for 27 years.

Being vegan didn’t keep amy from staying on topic.

What’s your preferred vegetarian steak substitute? I’d probably say chicken fried tofu is my preference. Maybe seitan?

Wouldn’t something like chicken of the woods be the logical choice?

I’ve had some good chicken fried tofu, but seitan to me has better texture

I don’t really see anything as a good vegan steak. I don’t really want a giant chunk of fakemeat product?

However, now that I’m thinking about it, there’s a place in Portland that’s run by the vegan cult people that follow the Supreme Master and they do a pretty good breaded fake meat thing for their meal called the “New York charm”. It’s def some kind of textured soy protein thing I’ve never had anywhere else.
The Asian grocery stores also sell a dried textured soy chunk thing that rehydrates into a pretty good fake steak strips kinda thing for stir fry, but I dunno where to buy that out here.

Tbh, my grandma raised beef cattle growing up and we ate so much beef, steaks aren’t really a thing I miss.

I agree. My first rule of good vegetarian/vegan food: there is no reason to try to emulate meat with not meat. Not meat can stand on its own.
Therefore any brain cells wasted thinking about vegan steak could be better used convincing bro to give us all caad13’s. For instance.

Okay, I’ll explain it another way: say you got some mashed potatoes and some green beans on your plate, maybe some brussel sprouts or what have you… I got chicken-fried tofu up in there. Who you going with?

When I was vegetarian the only entree option my family could ever really muster was spaghetti.
“So what do you eat, spaghetti? Oh well we can make a different sauce for you I guess.”
