I finally got this build done. I’ve had this frame for a looong time and can’t really sell it since road bikes go for peanuts now. At first I was going to throw the carbon Red group from @Hazlewood on it but that just seemed wrong (build still to come!). I really wanted to build it up like 2005 Rivendell road style as the bike I would have wanted then, but also now.
Fuji Opus III frame
10s barends from Fred
Noodle bars from when I thought that was cool
SRAM levers cuz they look best and I didn’t want to build to be all JDM
Ultegra/105/XT stuff
Tubeless Alex rims
Pirelli tires with 26 front 28 rear cuz mfing 28 wouldn’t fit front
Saddle and bagman from Jim
Zeitgeist
I guess I’m gonna try to fast commute on it! I wanted to get it done for summer, but nope!
I didn’t have enough hydraulic hose to route the rear brake cable under the bb so it’s zip tied along the top tube for now. This bike fucks so hard tho.
Family vacation to locations where riding a bike is preferable due to parking issues/distance between points of interest/presence of good path network.
Kiddo’s stamina is not up to riding that long on their own.
Strong preference for carrying bikes on the rear of vehicle for aero reasons.
Vehicle (RAV4) has side-swing rear door, access critical for road trip lunch stops, etc.
Budget/time constraints for purchasing new equipment.
EDIT: Strong preference to not bring a trailer or trail-a-bike due to space and complications maneuvering in crowds and singletracks.
What I came up with is this $200 craigslist Specialized Globe Haul 1. + cheapo rear seat with backrest, +foot pegs, +stoker stem and cruiser bar. Also with craigslist spare-tire mount car rack.
It all worked beautifully I kind of can’t believe it. Spare tire rack on the SUV was awesomely cheap and light and the door swung easily with the bikes on it. The bike is perfectly long enough for a kid on the back, but has the same wheelbase as my 29er and will fit in a normal tray/not stick out super wide. (good for hanging water bag and drying camp towel).
The Globe Haul’s integrated rack is rated for 120lbs. I drilled and tapped part of the rack/frame for the footpegs’ included M6 hardware, backed up with nuts just turned be sure.
Glad you tried these out, I’ve been preaching the granola gospel lately to anybody who’ll listen. such a good bar! Edit to say that the Ergon GP-1 BioKork pair really excellently with 'em
Well they did great on my 8 mile ride this morning. Maybe it’s all in my head but they didn’t seem to trigger my nerve issue like the Jones bars did. I dunno.
Do you know the difference between the size S and size L ergons? Which do you like?
Camped at Tamarack Flat, drove into the valley. Some shuttles weren’t running, and we had Roscoe with us. We split up, one adult+kid and other adult+Roscoe. Mrsthefly walked with Roscoe up to Yosemite falls and sat with her watercolor kit and painted uninterrupted for a few hours, she loved it. Roscoe got a zillion pets and ear scritches from tourists of all nationalities. This trip was really not about hiking, more doing mellow stuff and short hikes to falls, the art center, dip in the river, etc. It was wonderful.
I’ve been using these panyays on the front for years now without trouble. I typically strap them down to the rack on rough roads so they don’t fly around, which I’ll be doing this time as well.
