This bike didn’t have much purpose for my riding style anymore so it’s been sitting since the end of last year. Figured I could use it for single speed cx and make the events requiring a drive more manageable being able to do 2 races back-to-back instead of 3 hours apart.

I was planning to use this clutch MTB derailleur I had sitting around as a tensioner but wanted to see what the shifting with 11s road shifter was actually like to set it up as a 2-speed for jra on the weekdays between races. Turns out this hack set-up works perfectly.

11s road shifter

10s mtb rd

9s cogs and chain

5mm single speed spacers

Double shift for a clean shift between cogs

I set it up with 2 and then 3 cogs and it worked fine. If I’m figuring correctly it would be possible to do a 6-cog set-up.

Probably not useful to anyone else but as someone with a surplus of 9s cogs/chains, single speed spacers, and clutch MTB derailleurs with no MTB; I thought it was neat.

advancing two index positions for each actual cog?

Yes; I set it up as a 6 speed 14-26 (14-16-18-21-23-26) to test the total capacity on a 10s freehub and it works fine. Only adjustment was backing out the b screw to smooth the shifting from 14-16. Riding it feels almost completely normal, even with the clutch on. Mix of Shimano/SRAM cogs, probably a little smoother with all the same brand.

From what I’ve been able to find online the math for this doesn’t work. Which seems to indicate most of the references aren’t correct. Depending on the source the indexing should be off by 0.6-1.2mm per shift. Which would mean shifts 3-5 shouldn’t index.

My phone cams stopped working earlier this week so I had to film this on a 8 year old digital camera. The video has sound but you may need to open in a new tab for the volume to be selectable.

The low quality video was really bugging me so I ended up taking my phone apart and was able to fix the camera, sort of.

I’m curious about which model derangler that is and how you have the cable clamped in it.

M6000, cable clamped normally.

Added another Serotta to the collection. Yeah it’s like two sizes too big but it was $100 and I had all the parts in my stash. Fits 30mm tires easily. Maybe I’ll throw some swoopy bars on it.

How many are you up to now?

Those are deep bars! 30 mm sounds great.

6 currently. The track bike is probably the only one I wouldn’t sell.

The bars are some deep as fuck eastons I’ve had forever.
