This seems good
Markdown Sugino OX601 in silver at Black Mountain for $250:
The market for Sugino OX cranks is going to bottom out in a few weeks when Shimano GRX stuff starts trickling out. Retail for the 105-level crank is like $160 and weighs ~120g less than the Sugino
This is a recapitulation in miniature of the fate of Rivendell.
guys come buy my big tire relaxed road bike it’s made of steel and costs $5k wait what do you mean " a Diverge with 105 is $1900" oh god I’m ruined.
“The best bikes were 80s road bikes and 90s mountain bikes. Here’s our $5000 version, please ignore the for sale section of Craigslist or the bike rack at any thrift store in North America”
To be fair, a bike from Goodwill will probably have rotting foam handlebar grips, which are a million times more comfortable than shellaced twine.
wait how did Rivendell ever function as a company
And hopefully that means that the cost of the OX cranks will drop like a stone, because even though GRX cranks are nice, they’ve got that bizarre Shimano asymmetric 4-arm design which won’t take biopace.
I gifted my IBOC Mongoose to my poor thespian cousin the other day… but I had to swap out the crank with the mint biopace on it. Hopefully shes still happy with the green tires and the period correct flex-stem.
For those who are ox-601d focused, I’ll shrill the Japanese Amazon ‘dixna’ equivalents as a good cheap alternative.
The Dixna La?
Yep. Same bolt patterns and focus on narrow q, just no fancy machining. They also come in short lengths if 150mm cranks are of interest.
Aha, and it looks like Alex’s has them at ¥17500, which is a whole bunch better than the amazon price.
(whisper)someone please buy racks & frames from me(/whisper)
The only thing the OX601d have over the new GRX is a brushed silver version which I think will keep it afloat. As much as I appreciate shimano I wish they would make everything in a silver and black version. Doesn’t seem like that much of an ask.
I agree, but that last silver 105 they did wasn’t exactly a stunner.
Shiny silver takes a lot more finishing than you’d think. I’d say the modern finishes are purely price point driven
A lot of Shimano’s shapes they come up with would look hideous in silver. Everything looks good in black though.
the most disappointing thing about silver components to me is when you realize that most of them are an off-silver finish applied on an already silver-y metal that looks real bad when it starts chipping/flaking.
$200 for a nice hitch rack. Designed by a tarcker?
