Did you just ShartQ?

DQ Is it possible to have a sub 20lb build on a steel frame with reasonable components? Like with 105 or Ultegra and some basic carbon wheels?

I’m.a long way out but I started squirreling away $100 a month for my next (last) road bike. I really like the idea of a custom steel frame or maybe a nice production one like a Gunnar. But I also want it to be light with having to spend 5k on a group and wheels.

aiaiai – I was led astray by scooping up one of these for $10 – seeing it advertised as “ITA 30” I figured it’d fit. Looks like it does mate 30mm spindle cranks to threaded (in this case Italian threaded) frames, but only for 30mm cranks with sufficiently long spindles, this Sram one not being long enough.

Bro can u please not kludge your next bike

It’s going to cost a bit more but dammit it will all work together

Disc road/gravel. Maybe it can fit 32 with fenders or something.

Have you been hacked?

@Timarchylime jokes aside, your answer here is: it kinda depends on your budget. A simple road bike with light tubing definitely gets in under 20lbs with a fairly unexciting range of components. A Surly could get it done if you want to shovel money at Starbike and sundry central European garage composite shops.

Yep. Ya need something with a changeable spindle or a BB386 type crank- the “86” being the ~86mm over the 68mm bb and at least 9mm each side for cups and bearings on the bottom biscuit. Honestly just pay the money for a good Shimano road crank and bb and enjoy.

Yeah, knew that would be the answer at some point. I’m hoping to save up $3-4k over the next few years and go from there. Would be neat to spend 2k on a frame and 2k on parts. Don’t want to have anything nicer than Ultegra on this thing.

The fairlight strael might be a good option, I think there look book gives weights too so you could get an idea of finished weights by groupset and fanciness level.

I think you might try and scoot your budget up a smidge, a another few hundred might save you a few grams.

^ this.

My 54T Strael 2 weights 24.5lb. Absolutely no regard to weight savings went into component selection. This includes:

  • GRX 6xx shakes + GRX 4xx calipers
  • 105 pusher and dangler
  • Shimano non-series cranks with Stages PM left arm
  • Dyno hub + lights
  • Fenders
  • Klickfix bracket
  • bell
  • low-end SPD pedals
  • Niner RLT OEM rear wheel with 105 wide-range cassette
  • Ritchey comp seatpost and stem

2k on frame or frameset?

If you’re ok with used groups, you can probably land a decent mechanical ultegra wet disc group that might get you into the right area. However, anything other than serious budget wheels and contact points will put you over budget.

Alternately, if you have performance expectations and budget constraints, why not Canyon?

I love Shimano but … Sram has the little hole you can look through the frame … too cool. Older Campy does the same but I assume the BB woes there are yet greater

Of the “modern” interface standards, BB30 is the most likely to cause you grief ATMO.

All good points and questions. I’m just trying to get a ballpark so I can wrap my head around it. I know things will have changed in the 4 years it takes to save up, but I have been out of the game long enough to have lost track of the price/weight ratios.

Looks like sub 20lb steel is going to be a little more. And at that time maybe I’ll be looking to spend a little more. The future is full of mysteries!

if anything, 10% price escalation year-over-year should be accounted for
