Customer replaceable 18650? Badass.
^^your signal to noise ratio is heavily weighted towards the noise side. i’m a little hesitant to respond to your posts cause now i’m contributing to the noise and just stating the obvious.
the usb port will charge a variety of devices that someone may feel like taking on a long ride, and rides can go on for a lot more than three days.
that light was made in response to a need, and is highly desired.
i don’t know why anyone would worry about drag on a bike that has an internally geared rear hub. and like most bikes equipped with a dynamo the drag is a non issue with all of the other shit hanging on the bike, you just ride the thing. or maybe you should invest in a non-jankyass dynamo hub.
This is not for use on my piece of shit commuter. No doubt the USB charging has its uses and if you don’t want to use it they give you the option to just not use that length of cable. I’ve got no beef with that! It’d be nice for them to have a non-daytime running light option too, that’s all. The reason it exists at all is because a lot of EU countries require daytime running lights on cars by law now. It is safe. It is reasonable. I’d still like a light with a switch and the new reflector tech or a way to modify this one because for my uses I don’t need it.
The USB charging is an option, if you don’t want it you can buy a significantly cheaper and lighter version. The daytime running light feature is when the light is switched on. The light has a button on it that switches it off. Off is totally off. You can go to b&m’s web site and read the instruction sheet for this information. Eat more dicks.

yes, but $168 badass?
thx. That’s the only bit of info I was looking for. I did read the specs but missed the one grainy photo of the 0-S-1 switch. I wouldn’t buy the basic version because it doesn’t have then panorama and flood options, which seem good for going uphill slowly and downhill fast, respectively. Looks like I’d need to keep the switch for flood mode. Guess it could be mounted somewhere on the front rack of the bike I’m having built so it would be present but not create a jumble of cables on the top tube.
It’ll be interesting to see how it compares to the edelux for durability. Then again I find that dynamo systems are 1000000x more reliable than battery lights. I’ve had my cable fray without me noticing and the light still work because the dangling wire was making contact with the metal light mount. Love that shit.
shimano dh-3s are all unidirectional/ right sided Roxy. They come with a little cardboard sleeve indicating as much (“direction of rotation”).
For you nerds with new Luxos U, I just saw this:
In The SP hub thread the issue of wiring the new Luxos headlights to the tail lights came up, recently announced on Peter white’s web site. Since some of us owning these lights may have missed it, I thought it would be good to share it here:
Snipped from Peters site at:

"Compatibility
The Luxos U is not compatible with certain taillights.
(1) First, the original version of the Busch & Müller Toplight Line Plus BrakeTec is not compatible with the Luxos U. Actually, most of these taillights will work, but a few won’t, due to slight variations in the tolerances of one internal component in the taillight. Given the complex nature of that taillight as well as the Luxos U, there is sometimes a problem, and the two lights ought not be used together.
We will have a new version of the Toplight Line Plus BrakeTec taillight late in June, 2013.
(2) Second, the Luxos U should not be used with any taillight that grounds to the frame. This is the case even though the Luxos U itself isn’t grounded. It has to do with the Luxos U’s ability to warn you if your taillight isn’t functioning properly. These are the taillights from Busch & Müller that should not be used with the Luxos U, at least not without making some modifications.

(E) B&M 4DToplight Senso Multi (rack mounted)
(F) B&M DToplight XS (rack mounted)
(G) B&M DToplight XS Plus (rack mounted)
All of these taillights ground to the frame via their mounting bolts. Some of them can easily have the ground contact disconnected, enabling them to work with the Luxos U. As I type this on June 14, 2013, Busch & Müller is preparing instructions for disconnecting the ground contact in some of these taillights, and I will post those instructions as soon as possible; probably early in the week of June 16 - June 22.
The B&M Toplight Line Plus, Toplight Flat Plus, and Toplight Flat S Plus do not ground to the frame, and will all work correctly with the Luxos U without modification."
Appreciated. My Luxos U is in transit but I haven’t decided on a tail light.
FWIW, the Busch & Müller Toplight Line Plus BrakeTec I bought within the last year works fine, didn’t seem to work with the leads one way so I reversed the rear light “polarity” which magically made it operational. I must have one of the “most of these taillights will work” versions.
the yellow LED that’s supposed to warn you that your headlight is disconnected worked on mine originally
but sometime around when my original taillight fell off it stopped working
dunno if it’s a short in the wire or what, haven’t bothered to troubleshoot since it’s such a silly feature in the first place
Thanks, haven’t had time to look into tail lighting yet.
But I fucking LOVE the Luxos U, gave me all of it night riding on dark ass forest roads recent tour.
Had cars believe I was an on coming car and slowing them down noticeably with only 70lux-mode.
I’d probably blind them with it blasting full.
A+ Would scare cars again.
DQ: Shimano DH-T785L or Shutter Precision SD-8 for dyno wheel on Endpoint?
It’s basically centrelock & 522g or 6 bolt / 385g and less drag / more drilling options.
I have an (non-disk) SP hub on my Boulder and Ash has one on her Miyata and it’s a much nicer and smoother hub than the Shimano on my Traffic.
For the price it can not be beat.
What dynohub to put on Endpoint Coffee Grinder is relevant to my interests. Tarckpinions? Can anyone comment on the Shutter Precision vs the Schmidt offerings? I am aware that the Schmidt is 2x the price…but its worth doing right once. Schmidt only comes in 28h right?
i have a schmidt. it’s fine. there are other options though
Hmmm, I’ll have to bite some pride and use shimano alfine dynamo-dyad that I stole back from ex’s bike before shipping it back to her.
Excited to have a bike that is disc to use it on.
Most SONs come in 24-36 hole drillings. There is one annoying misfeature with SON hubs; they use (or used to use) separate spade lugs to wire the hub to the bicycle mains, while basically everybody else except for Sturmey-Archer uses Shimano-style plugs. It makes it a lot harder to build a spare wheelset for emergencies when you have to fork out US$2-300 for your spare dynohub.
As far as I can tell, the PV-8 works just as well as the SON28 does. It vibrates at a slightly different speed than the SON, but not so much to be more than slightly annoying. The hub bodies are narrower, so if you’re worried about a narrow front wheel you might prefer a SON, but other than that why not go for the cheaper one?
Nothing at all wrong with my PV8 so far. I would say, in this case it makes sense to cheap out and maybe use the money you save to get a more fancy light.
Tis what I did and went all in on the new B&M Luxos U.
Haven’t done so much milage on my PV8 wheel yet but it’s hella sturdy so far and built up easy.
32h just for the sake of it.
Anyone used dynohubs with a USB charging setup? I’m considering buying one for touring. Having my cell charged at all times would be nice, and I guess I could use lighting as well.
The Luxos U is an obvious contender but it’s expensive as hell and there were reports of rain killing it. Apparently B&M redesigned it to fix the problem (eliminated a connector at the lamp body where the water was getting in) but I’d need to somehow make sure I get an updated model. To be honest, I don’t give a shit about MEGA POWER headlights. I don’t need or want people to mistake me for a motorbike, I just want reliable USB charging and a passable light, mostly just to keep the cops off my back.
Online searches also came up with the Axa (Basta) Nano 50 Plus: http://www.bikeradar.com/commuting/news/article/axa-nano-50-plus-first-look-33632/
This is a lot cheaper than the Luxos. I don’t really care that the light is weaker and probably has a worse beam pattern… But I’ve never heard of this company and I can’t find a review of this light anywhere. I want a decent quality reliable light/charger. Anyone know anything about Axa or this light in particular? Are there any other light/USB options?
