today’s jackass: 730am and i’m riding on the right side of the road. some clown ass on a hybrid is coming at me on my side of the road. i don’t move and gesture him back over to the other side because there’s a car coming behind me. he smiles real big and just keeps coming. dude was totally fucking oblivious and just continues to ride right down the middle of the oncoming traffic lane.
it is astonishing that some people have managed to survive this long.
I saw a bike cop to almost exactly that same thing the other day.
I had to move out of her way.
I also got salmoned into the traffic lane the other day by a guy on a Bullitt.
I used force them to my left followed by a “cheerio” or “g’day, mate”. To the point of stopping if I had to. Now I dgaf and am much happier.
I got pretty miffed last night on our group ride. There were 10 of us total.
We all made our way to a stoplight, and a car pulled up behind us. My friend, in good faith, went over to the car and talked to the driver through the window
Friend: “Hey there, we’re all going straight, so if you want to go around us we’ll hold on so you don’t get stuck”
Driver: “WELL, I’M A COP AND I’M STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW IN THE HELL ANY OF THIS IS LEGAL”
Friend: “I’m not sure what you mean, I just wanted to make sure you didn’t get stuck behind us”
Driver: “WHARRRRRGARBL PERMITS WHAAAAARRRERARHA SINGLE FILE”
So we just rode at our normal pace, took the lane, and made her dumbass go 15mph behind us until she decided to punishment pass us (keep in mind, this was a regular car, and the driver was not in any sort of police uniform.)
I hate people.
Let’s talk cameras again for just that thing. You are I. The US? I’m pretty sure punishment passes can be charged as menacing - not that you would pursue it but it’s possible. I think I want a camera for commutes. Is there a cheap knockoff that works well yet?
I have a pair of Contour Roam2 cameras that work pretty well, but I lost the SD card on one. They don’t work well at night though, which is frustrating.
Have considered getting a couple of cameras but most of my commutes are in the dark, except for homeward in summer…
Yeah I really didn’t know that they weren’t good in the dark when I bought them. Like, the rearward facing camera shows nothing but points of light, and the front camera has a grainy image where my headlight shines. They’re awesome in the daytime though.
So… The ding dong still works there then is what I got out of that.
I think if anything it’s a good opportunity for a frank conversation about the apparent need for a ‘token attractive woman’ in cycling publications and promotions. Maybe Cycling Magazine can have a full length article about that in the next issue.
But they probably won’t. And if they did it would no doubt be written by a dude.

Had a pretty awful interaction the other day. I was waiting at a stoplight to turn left onto a busy street, so I was full in the lane. Riding out of a parking lot for an office building.
I’m there, waiting, and hear a car pull up behind me. Then, engine revving. I turn and look: a middle aged white guy, affluent, with a wife clutching a dog. In a very, very nice Mercedes. He’s looking at me. I glance for a moment then turn back to wait for the light.
The revving continues, gets louder and more aggressive. I resist looking back again. It gets more insistent and so I turn.
This guy looks me in the eye, flips me off, and says, “fuck you, you piece of shit cyclist. Get the fuck out of my way.” I am waiting at a red light and tell him so. He then flips me off with both hands and tells me to get off the road because I’m a piece of shit cyclist. His wife doesn’t look at me.
Again I tell him I’m waiting for a light, just trying to get somewhere. He continues his angry tirade.
I tell him he’s a huge asshole. I look at his wife – “why are you married to this guy? He’s an asshole!” She looks away.
He continues to scream, yell, tells me to fuck off, flips me off, revs his engine. The light is still red.
I tell him to just fucking leave me alone. He doesn’t.
The light turns green and he slams the gas, passes me with an inch to spare. I scream through his window, “eat shit and fucking die, you piece of shit!” He peels out, his V8 Mercedes accelerates through the intersection. For less than a second. He slams the brakes because the traffic is at a standstill in the other side of the intersection.
I turn left and ride away.
The depth of hatred this guy has for me was pretty chilling.
