yesterday i brought home all these things in my bag
2 loaves of bread
1 box of cereal
1 box of granola bars
1 bottle of vegetable oil
1 small bag of carrots
1 small bag of mushrooms
1.5lbs of chicken
1 pckg chicken sausages
1 large back of tortilla chips
plus ulock and tools.
i also carry a pen and paper everywhere, and tampons. and scissors usually too.
i carry the following things in a little bag inside my messenger bag (except the 15mm cuz it doesnt fit and the allen cuz i use it so much)
1 15m wrench
1 allen multitool
1 leatherman tool
1 spare tube
2 tire levers
2 co2 cartridges
1 co2 pump
1 patch kit
1 screw driver multi-tool
1 small utility knife
i always have them because i know the one time i don’t, i’ll end up getting a flat. i also have a crescent wrench in my bag which i don’t particularly need since i have a 15mm, but it comes in handy on occasion
Getting ready for a ride, but this is what I always carry in my hipbag. Tube, mini lighter, tire levers, patch kit, 15 mm, wallet, and CO2 (My allen wrenches should be in there but I guess they’re in the big bag for some reason). U-lock goes in the holster, phone in my pocket, and keys on belt loop.
u guys carry things in your bags?
i find my chrome bag to be more comfortable when it’s empty…
+1, thats why I got the smallest chrome bag I could find. Less weight more aero for those blisteringly fast 10 mph rides.

I just replaced my chrome bag with this:
Photo doesn’t really show how small it is. It weighs not so much. Works well for commuting.
Waterproofing looks to be decent, but this is California and it probably won’t rain until October. I could stand in the shower with it, if that helps? I picked it up for $35 on closeout. Did I mention it was light?
Mess bags have a lot of benefits in terms of handling. Getting things in an out quickly is pretty easy. Access to the bag happens pretty readily. I’m discovering this now that I’m using a backpack for commuting. The only downside to a mess bag is the fact that they wreck your back if you have any kind of real weight in them for more than a short period of time.
This is just a personal thing. When I had 2 straps(this might just be the bag I had) but when I was up on the flats and hoods it pinched my shoulders pretty hard. Also I find the messenger bags generally sit closer to the back and doesn’t slosh around.
This has been an uninformed message brought to you by Tarckbear.
like stated above, i don’t like them for carrying large loads. It hurts!
plus i don’t find things that easy to access when that big ass front flap is so in my face. Do you guys not find that annoying?

neither of my bags are stiff enough for this to be a problem. i only use my ortlieb for groceries due to lack of easy access. i can’t even get a lock out of it without taking it off and this gets very tiresome. whereas on a messenger bag i can pull out my lights while riding, lock/unlock in a hurry, etc.
i thought the one-shouldered weight thing would be a problem when i broke my collarbone the first time and it was hard, but i found the improvement minimal and the convenience not worth it overall.
plus this ortlieb is so big if i did fill it up, i would probably fall over when i stood up.
The other night my wife sent me to Cobbys (local hoagie place) for soup and sandwiches. The soup came in a styrofoam cup and I kept touching the bottom of my bag to feel for soup leaking out on the way home.
I have 4 bags, -saddle bag, --fannypack, —small backpack, ----bigger backpack.
(anything that goes into a smaller bag, also goes in a bigger bag)
-patch kit (sometimes I carry a tube, but usually just my kit)
-multi tool
-keys
-wallet
-cellphone
-extra batteries
–reflective vest
–arm warmers
–lock
—shoes
—hat
—notebook (if school is in)
—food I picked up
----groceries I picked up
edit: I much prefer backpacks to mess bags, especially the backpacks that have the clips like you’re parachuting or something.
