Fenders

… which is a good thing.

BTW I love fenders.
Well installed fenders actually look nice imo.

i wish i could actually put something like these to use, properly… that’d be pretty awesome

Fenders are great. I keep them on one bike for the rainy season. It pretty much hasn’t rained in months, though, so I took them off for the summer, since I don’t want to deal with the toe overlap with fenders if there’s no reason to. The toe overlap is really the only thing that sucks about fenders, and if you ride big frames, it’s probably less of an issue.

For those that are using the Planet Bike Cascadia Fenders, what kind of tires are using to go with it? The PB site says that with the fender it can only take up to 700x28.

That probably means they are around 35 mm wide (this is the standard size for “skinny” fenders). It’s recommended that you have at least 3-4 mm of fender overhanging on either side of your tire. You don’t have to set your bike up this way of course; you can run whatever tire size you can fit under your fenders. Hoewver, it might make your fenders a bit less effective if there is minimal or no overhang. I’m running 40-some odd mm Velo Orange aluminum fenders with 700*32’s.

Mudguards rock. Homemade mudflap on the bottom FTW. Made from milk bottle and bolted on. Better dig mine out soon and put them on. What bike to put them on though, that is the question.

I use one of those seatpost set-ups for suspension mtbs. Works well and looks like ass.

Those seatpost fenders are almost worthless.

Yes mudflaps make a huge difference. I need to make some and keep forgetting about it.
I have 45mm? SKS fenders with 32s on my commuter. Nothing negative to say about having fenders on an everyday bike.

I have them.

I was going to try to track down some white Bluemels, but the previous owner of the bike bought these and never installed them so he sent them to me.

They look cool, but for everyday use I’d recommend going another route - either SKS, Planet Bike Cascadia, or one of the Velo Orange house brand styles.

Honjo all the way.

Fenders are the best, and they’re a total no-brainer for anyone who commutes by bike, especially anyone who is car-free. If you don’t have a bike that will accept fenders, then go get one. The Planet Bike fenders are great. I wouldn’t hesitate to use them on any bike, I think they’re practical, easy to install and pretty classy for a plastic fender.

I just bought these Berthoud stainless fenders, but haven’t got around to installing them yet.

i want your mercian.
thats all.

if you don’t have threading in the track end but do have enough clearance, you can use p-clamps (http://www.velo-orange.com/pforfeat.html) to jeri-rig some fenders onto your track bike.

last year i rode full fenders on my KHS and it was great for the rain but the noise got on my nerves a lot sometimes. they’d slip from time to time too and need adjusting.

this year i think i’m going to ride race blades and see how i like them. obviously they won’t make for as dry of a ride as full fenders, but the added convenience and easy adjustability seems nice. i need to invest in more cycling-specific winter clothing though.

where’d you get that fucking bell!!!

Seatpost fenders aren’t worthless. Compared to a full coverage set, they’re almost a joke. But compared to nothing, they’re pretty great.

They basically just keep your ass dry and nothing else. Good for those fluke days in the summer where it just suddenly starts raining, worthless for an entire winter of riding.

I keep thinking about getting some Honjo fenders for my Trek, but then I remember how many times I’ve scraped the ends of my Planet Bike fenders on curbs and roots, twisted and bent them it all kinds of ways to lock up, gotten shit caught in them and just generally abused them. They’re still in basically perfect shape, hardly even scratched, except for the end of the rear fender, which is getting a little scraped up, but that’s what happens when you try to ride trails with fenders (it was an unplanned, one-time thing). I think if I had Honjos, I’d probably break them within a few weeks and be back on the Planet Bike fenders. I think mine are the “Hybrid” size, because they can cover a 35mm knobby tire. Just. I’m probably going to move to 32mm knobbies before the rainy season. If you have fender mounts, these are hard to beat. They’re also fairly light (as fenders go) and have a nice, low-key look to them. Goes well with the parts-bin aesthetic of my Trek.

DFL, in my own experience foil core plastic fenders aren’t indestructible and alu fenders are certainly not fragile. I have killed two front sks p35’s so far; one from a crack due to kicking the front fender while (dumbly) trying to clip in at high speed on a fg, and one from a funny front wheel failure. I’m now riding the velo orange aluminum fenders and they seem pretty hard to fuck with so far. They will definitely hold up to commuting, lockups etc.
