Framebuildin' part 3

bronze everything unless its stainless. silver costs too many doll hairs to just be fuckin around with

Either works as long as you pick the appropriate filler for the gaps and vice versa. My shorelines are waayyy better in silver so I usually use that for the legs but might use brass on the steerer where the cleanup is faster. I might pick brass for the legs if I had a blocky solid crown to make the heat distribution situation a little easier.

Speaking of bronzing everything, I haven’t used any yet. On the two bikes I’ve done I used 56 silver for lugs and 45 for any fillets.

I did buy some LFB and a tub of powder anti-borax flux, that’s what I want right?

The LFB and powder flux will work but the Harris blue paste flux and rods work better all around.

Paste flux is more better. You can turn your powder into paste by adding water, but for the $10-$20 for a lb it’s worth buying the stuff. Harris, Gasflux, Cycle Design are all good and easy to mail order in the US if your LWS doesn’t carry it (the first two they might, maybe, if you have old industry in town).

I like to bronze most things on forks assuming the fit ups are appropriate.

This is the first bit of brazing in the new shop (and the first bit after the transition to PA). All GF rod (higher nickle than LFB) and GF paste flux:

or phone up the cycle designs dude and chat about your life goals for three hours
he’ll hook it up.

As much as I like the sounds of the cycle design stuff, shipping and exchange rate effectively doubles the price everything they sell for me.

We got lots of industry in town, I’ll look around for harris/gasflux stuff.

First miter on my “new” 1923 K&T 1b on the first tube of the first frame in my PA shop.

Flux off the first bike from the new shop.

I’m digging the direction this one is going in.

I really like the relief you did on the threaded side of the seat clamp

I wish I could take credit for that- this particular one came with the countersink.

Also, some fork stuff:

And the first one of these I’ve done in too long. Muscle memory is pretty solid.

Really excited to be back in the shop!

I’m gonna to start working on some practice fillets and practice forks soon. I was thinking I’d use a piece of straight gauge 0.083" 4130 as the “steerer” and cut up a set of blades so I can do a few crowns.

When I cut up a practice joint what should I look for? Brass on the inside all the way around right? and for forks? just full penetration with no voids?

Full penetration, even flow, internal fillets, etc.

why are these dropouts so freakin ugly

Nice!

I need to figure out something to put on my frames like logo and or name. Just for fun though, not taking orders anytime soon.
