hey y’all, anyone know if there’s anyone running good deals on bib/kit rn? I need at least two pairs of bibs a jerz or two. I used to buy some from wiggle (for shame), but their house brand changed the patterns and pads in their bibs and they are truly awful now.
what are we into for walkable mtb shoes? My giro code VR70’s are awesome XC shoes, but too slippery for the north shore gnar
What are shorts with a narrow chamois? Dunno if longballs, but it seems like my shorts are grinding in the seam between my thigh and taint.
+1 on good, cheap bibs. EmPHAsis on cheap and good.
Also, my wife built a front wheel rack out of PVC. Works pretty good until you put a loaded commuter disaster in it and then it pulls apart, because we didn’t glue it for easy disassembly.
Also: Assos LOLOL This is what I will look like:
I like my Sidi Spiders. I’ve done some gnarly shit in them while touring and found them really confidence inspiring walking up and down mountainsides. I got the carbon sole which does not have a mid-sole gripper, so stepping over stuff that only contacts the middle of your foot is not great. There is also a PU sole that does have a mid-sole gripper. They cost a lot but Sidi shoes fit my foot, no hot spots, and are one less thing I need to think about, worry about failing me. Worth the $$$.
also backing sidi spiders. mine are on 3-4 years, replaced the soles last year mid spring. though they smell pretty bad when they get wet/stay wet for a few hours.
giro terraduro?
I’m thinking of getting some if I get a Smuggler.
Mavic Crossmax Pro H2O? Looks good for the gnar, plus Goretex.

I just went with the Big S 2FO Clip, feels pretty sturdy enough and comfortable to walk in.
A flatter grippy vibram-sole than the Mavic version above for sure:

I’m on my second pair (first ones were recalled due to incorrect glue used on cleat plate & sole interface).
I really love them but they have some serious issues I hope they eventually improve (still haven’t looked at the 2016 version yet).
things I like:
- extremely durable & long lasting vibram sole
- great for walking, hiking, camping & riding
- extremely comfortable for my skinny-ish feet (They also make a high-volume version http://www.giro.com/us_en/terradurohv.html)
- surprisingly waterproof and windproof, my feet rarely get cold
- comes in black, orange or blue!
things i dont like:
- heavy
- the heal padding/fabric is shit, both versions have disintegrated in the heel cup area. They need to redesign with durable pleather material & thinner/denser padding
- sole is starting to separate from the top of the shoe along the entire edge (version 2.0), this didn’t happen on the first version. It doesn’t appear that the separation will accelerate beyond its current state.
Also, if you get them make sure to put a strip of gorilla tape over the cleat area under the insoles where water can percolate up if you stand in a puddle
.
I’ve been wearing the Pearl Izumi Men’s X-Alp Seek VI daily for about 15 months. No complaints, very well-ventilated (sometimes too well-ventilated, my toes get chilly easy), good traction, comfy to walk in, relatively quick-drying, don’t look like biek shoes. Will probably by another pair when these finally die but they’ve been absolute champs so far. I figured the rubber would wear down and the cleats would start scraping but haven’t really noticed that at all.
Those look rad for summer adventuring
I’m still chapped they quit making the gore-tex version of those.
Shimano shm200 is a great shoe, love my pair, recommend them to anyone looking for a non-xc general use shoe, I would buy them again if I needed to
i think I’m after something inbetween the 2fO and the terraduro
the shimanos look sick but they are like 800g per shoe
maybe the Spec. Rime Expert?
I don’t think it’s really the lack of grip my current shoes have, but the ridiculous stiffness that makes them impossible to scuttle around in. What kinda pedals are you guys (ooges and viggen) running?
That’s the weight per pair (~150g more than the xc90), and the cheaper trail shoes from shimano are actually lighter because of less protection
i drilled 1/4" holes through the joists in my basement ceiling and looped strong zip ties through. now i just put the saddle nose in the zip tie loop. it’s great, they stay out of the way and it makes use of this weird space between the stairs and the supports in my basement.
Very happy with the Pearl Izumi X-Alp Launch II:
