Gear Recommendations (old)

awhile a go someone on here posted a link to a head-to-toe cycling rain suit, anybody remember who made it?

Man I think I’d rather just get wet than wear one of those

I’ll go first: what rain booties do people like? Double points if they work well in wet, dry, and cold. My current system is pretty much shot, but I’ve been wearing these Castelli things that are windproof and somewhat insulated (fleecy inside), and then covering them with water resistant Giro things. It’s been okayish, but since both pairs are ripped, and have decomposing zippers, I’d like to upgrade on a replacement. Thinking about those pink Rapha jawns, but mostly because they’re pink.
You can use a 30% code posted on their website on the pink Rapha jawns right now.

^are the pink rapha overshoes legit?

the website says they’re not meant for MTB shoes, which is what i use when for 98% of the riding that requires booties. derp. woulda bought them if not for that… since the coupon code brings them quite near the price of the other booties i’m looking at.
I keep forgetting to pick up some cleats for these guys. Excited to try them this fall/winter.
Kinda bummed there isn’t buckles and I need to adjust to slow lace-up life but I will survive.
Will review soon.

Ride em yet?

I ended up buying the Endura ones like Dougie has, but I did snag a Rapha rain jacket with the 30% code. I’ve been looking for a packable rain jacket for over a year, and the Rapha one is the only one I’ve found.

ugh, why do LBS have the worst hours? 10am-6pm bros? unpossible!
Think I will just order on internet.

REI is your solution for dumb shop hours.

Oh yeah, good point.

Back to vests - I have been anti-vest for most of my life but I’m coming around on them now. I’m looking for something wind resistant but with a little insulation, and also a color other than black/gray would be nice too. I’d say water resistant too but is that a dumb requirement for a vest?

Vests are great for windy days during colder weather

Huh? P sure most major clothing companies have a packable rain jacket. That said, I like my Rapha one. Plus if you wreck your shit they’ll fix it for you.

TC: I know this makes me a greybeard but I’ve really been eyeing that discontinued Mavic Vision vest. It’s definitely the most aesthetic pleasing of the dorky hi-viz vests.
Other than that I have a light wind vest made by Voler. I like the fit quite a bit and seems optimized for cool damp (but not downpour) weather.
Think it was called Equipe Windshell Vest (Vortex Fabric)
note: doesn’t have any insulation tho

The grey reflective stuff (seen on aforementioned mavic vest, and Rapha) tends to peel off. So there’s that.

I’ve had pearl Izumi and they are ok but they fit short in the torso. I’ve got a showers pass rain vest that works but is now 3-4? Seasons old and is looking it’s age after some mud and road grunge.

I think I’m going to go old-fashioned and just go to some sporting goods stores and see what I like. All of the cycling-specific vests are lighter than I think I want. But then I’m also worried if I get what I think I want that it will be too heavy… Which is why I think I need to see some in person.

I had the Rapha Hi Vis Gilet and the reflective stripes peeled off. They sent me like $300 of credit to replace it so I bought the Brevet jersey+vest combo. I like this vest better - it is thinner and has more mesh (I run hot hot hot) - but it lacks pockets, which were nice to have.

I also have the Giro Insulated Vest. I usually wear it around town as an off bike/warm up piece rather than a dedicated ride piece. It’s too warm for me for that use case. I like it - surprisingly warm for how thin/light/packable it is. The cut around the shoulders is weird and kind of bunches up when I’m in bike position.

I’ve had the thinnest montane rain vest and jacket for years now. The elastic to tighten up the back wore out two years ago on both and I got some new elastic put in at the dry cleaner for like $15 for the both of them. I keep meaning to buy something more substantial but they work and I can’t be bothered. My #1 concern with a vest is wind puffing it up at speed when it gets into your pit area. When I used to race in it that really pissed me off. Wasted energy.

You guys have me wondering if I don’t really need more of a vest than I have now… Right now I have a PI jacket the sleeves zip off of. I wore it once this year and was disappointed in its performance, but it was also really goddamn cold outside and I don’t think I’d layered enough in the first place. But, it’s also hi-vis yellow, and while I don’t want something black I don’t know what I necessarily want to wear a screaming Fred vest all winter either.

If it fits, keep it. If it is cold wear some sleeves.
