Gear Recommendations (old)

Huh? P sure most major clothing companies have a packable rain jacket. That said, I like my Rapha one. Plus if you wreck your shit they’ll fix it for you.
I already bought the Rapha one, but go ahead and find me another packable women’s rain jacket. No men’s stuff.

i think you might have the PI barrier? i had an older model of one of those and it worked ok. was not rain proof though.

Yeah, that’s the one. Definitely not rain proof, but good for a sprinkle. I wore it most of the winter last year, and with three layers beneath it I stayed warm enough but still got really sweaty. I feel like when it’s 20F outside that I shouldn’t have to sweat, but I’m starting to think that that’s just the price of staying warm.

i can’t speak to the fit of the women’s stuff too much but i’ve really liked my jackets from them, materials and construction are good and the fit is pretty euro. there’s a more packable model but it might not have enough waterproofness for your needs.

oh, also a fuckton cheaper than rapha.

Well, shit. NOW you post it! I’ve only seen non-packable Endura stuff here.

If it is actually raining and then things clear up I don’t mess around with packable stuff anyway. Just shove whatever under your jersey and enjoy the added aero benefit of a hump.

You’re right, there are fewer ladies options but these two would seem to fit the bill as well:

My gf has the giro one, which she likes. It’s a little bigger than some when packed down, but it looks well-made and I feel better about its long term durability.

This is relevant to my interests.

Was thinking about getting a proper lightweight vest in a high viz color this week and the S rep happened to swing though selling some of his fall samples.

Picked up this guy: http://www.specialized.com/us/en/ftr/winter-apparel/mens-deflect/deflect-hybrid-jacket

Used it this morning. Was not disappointed.

Somewhat unrelated… also grabbed his swat bib knickers. They are legit. Seams above the knee are actually in the right place to prevent weird binding or riding up. Pad is actually in the right place as well.

I’m currently looking for a new multi-use rain jacket/shell. Kind of want something yellow but not hi-vis yellow. More like fisherman jacket yellow.

I keep forgetting to pick up some cleats for these guys. Excited to try them this fall/winter.
Kinda bummed there isn’t buckles and I need to adjust to slow lace-up life but I will survive.
Will review soon.

Ride em yet?
Commuted on them Friday, not really rainy or cold. They seemed to be pretty hot for 40-50 deg F riding but not as bad as I was expecting, very bearable.

The next day I wore them for the weekend camping trip and they worked amaaaaaazing for that. I could not think of more appropriate footwear for stomping around in the damp woods, the wet Puget Sound beaches then a long ride back. There was even a downpour at the end of the ride but my feet were warm and relatively dry (see: sweat).

The boot is really well constructed and fits me great (sized up by 1/2 since no 0.5 sizes). It doesn’t really feel too “booty” when your cycling and doesn’t impede on your ankle movement.

My one worry is during downpours if you have you pant leg rolled you might want some low ankle high gaiters since the top of the boot where you foot enters kinda opens up like a thirsty flower with lots of exposed padding.

The cleat position is great and they even captured the cleat plate between the sole and another layer inside the boot. It appears they are separated with a barrier but I’m not sure if it is a waterproof barrier. I didn’t feel any water being sucked up through the cleat hole but I should do an experiment at home with some water in a tray to simulate a puddle.

The Boot walks well as expected. When standing on flat ground it seems like the boot might have benefited from a slightly taller heel but when you start to walk you don’t notice it. Also the sole curves in such a way that you get a satisfying roll from heel to toe through the step, this removes all the clunky feeling I usually get from walking around in my hiking boots.

Overall, two thumbs up so far.

Sounds good! Are they as heavy as they look though?

Ended up buying a sale down vest at Eddie Bauer for winter commuting. Really digging it - we had a really strong, cold wind here today and I was still comfortable with a couple light layers and the vest.

Yeah, they are pretty heavy but I didn’t really notice while walking and riding.

Rec for beanie/skullcap that fits well under helmet?

I have an assos one that is great, it’s called “the stinger hat”.

i have a few: smartwool trainer, smartwool lightweight(?), and an icebreaker. i like the smartwool trainer.

How is this thread not about the number of skid patches for a particular ring/cog combo yet?

edit: I have this and love the shit out of it. It’s pretty hot though. Like happy to near zero f, hot.

Glad to hear those actually work well for their intended purpose, unlike a lot of crossover gear/apparel.

thanks for the recommendations tarck.

Also just got some defeet knee warmers and they rock. One size fits all and did not slide down my little legs. Really warm in the front and has a thinner weave on the back. Mucho better than the smartwool ones I have before (thin, didn’t stay on, seams frayed super quick).

Check this out. Clothing recommendations broken out in 10º F, wet and dry conditions.

cycling jacket for super broad shoulders?
