get me into winter cycling

i bought sugoi’s before pace’s existed.
thumbs up.
Also recommend the swrve pants. Need to take mine in in the waist, want to take in at the cuff too, but that’d kinda ruin the pants. small cuffs seems like half the point of cycling pants right?

hat so comfy i wanna wear it all the time
is this too good to be true? i have a summit series gore-windstopper soft-shell that i really like, but i want a gore-tex shell, too. i mean, is it possible that this won’t really be gore-tex?

Jamey. That’s Gore-Tex XCR which iirc is now “old”. It was the first really “new” type of gore-tex created over the original. It was designed to be lighter and more breathable. I highly recommend it if you haven’t purchased already.

I say I think it was disco’d because when I was home last (last fall semester) working in the ski shop, there were different new levels of gtx that didn’t include xcr.

I have GTX XCR shoes though. You won’t be disappointed.

awesome! this is what i wanted to hear.
if you’re going to try, go all the
way.
otherwise, don’t even start.

if you’re going to try, go all the
way. this could mean losing girlfriends,
wives, relatives, jobs and
maybe your mind.

go all the way.
it could mean not eating for 3 or
4 days.
it could mean freezing on a
park bench.
it could mean jail,
it could mean derision,
mockery,
isolation.
isolation is the gift,
all the others are a test of your
endurance, of
how much you really want to
do it.
and you’ll do it
despite rejection and the
worst odds
and it will be better than
anything else
you can imagine.

if you’re going to try,
go all the way.
there is no other feeling like
that.
you will be alone with the
gods
and the nights will flame with
fire.

do it, do it, do it.
do it.

all the way
all the way.
you will ride life straight to
perfect laughter,
it’s the only good fight
there is.
+100 :bear: s to you!
Well done.

OK tell me about gloves. I need something full finger, waterproof, lightly insulated/padded. Any recommendations?

i tried some on the other day. i wish i could remember.

ugh. I could probably tell you a bazillion pairs of gloves NOT to get.

I haven’t found any for cycling that I really like. People rave about the lobsters, and I would just wear a liner underneath them, but Im having a hard time jiving with that purchase.

not everyone lives in a barren arctic wasteland, i mean… north dakota. gloves that don’t work for you will probably be fine for most of us.

i have a pair of specialized winter gloves that i really liked for anything above like 15 degrees F. below that it was snowboard/ski gloves/mittens. pearl izumi makes some decent gloves and craft makes great stuff.

where can i get good wool socks for minimum price
winter shit is expensive

army surplus store

or just buy two really nice pairs from rei, ems, or a similar outdoors store. it’ll be worth it.

Gore brand gloves are pretty decent. Some are better than others, usually the more expensive the better as far as they are concerned. I still haven’t found the perfect pair of gloves. My hands are always cold in the winter.

Also, most of the questions in this thread are relative to what ‘winter’ is like where you live. It could be a total waste of your time and money to bother with any of the advice here unless you’ve described what is like where you live. Probably worth your time to describe the conditions you’ll be in.

i feel cold all the time anyway

Ice cold?

Correct. I’m speaking from my Buffalo, NY experience. Since I also actively ski and winter there is “normal” it’s just hella snowy. I really don’t mean to come up in here all hardcore like fuck all of your winters my winters are better. I’m just tryin to pass along useful advice.

That all said, I have (honestly) been searching for a pair of gloves for cycling and driving (the liners) that are “perfect” and I just haven’t found them. I use some hotfingers for skiing and riding. They’re nice because they have a skirt. But not “waterproof”. I’ve tried many sets. As the bike shops I’ve worked at were also ski shops (is that a common thing elsewhere btw?).

So… that was my point.

Also if you watch steep and cheap and bonktown etc. they run smartwools often enough for nice prices.

Fuck gloves. Mittens, kittens.

I’m looking for something for 40 and raining. I want to keep my hands dry more than warm, but I want a cycling glove for the padding. The gore ones look nice, i’ll have to find a place to try them on. I have long skinny fingers so I sometimes have trouble finding gloves that fit well.

Question 2: How do you keep them from getting funky with regular use? I wash my hands…

Lots of funk can be gotten rid of by simply putting them in the freezer.

If you get soaked, let them dry completely, and then throw them in a zip lock bag and freeze them for like 24-48hrs. It kills bacteria and will generally help the odors. I used to do it with sneakers.
