Hosted a Tracklocross race yesterday. Almost cancelled because of weather but glad I didn’t. Couple people came out from Portland. Had a great time. Learned that I hate organizing things but I’ll probably do it again next year.

Rode out early morning to finish getting the course set up. Broke a pedal getting there and had to limp to town to wait for the bike shop to open. I gave myself plenty of time to get shit done and grab something to eat before the race but that didn’t work out. Finished the race exclusively on beer calories.

There was one of the Nike entrances that wasn’t blocked. Behold, forbidden road.

Not sure what i was thinking. I said to my buddy Chris. The boss lady is away this weekend, if you want to do a gear check for the upcoming Renegades Muster bikepacking event, Im keen. So he marked out a course. Pretty lame on paper and hardly any climbing compared to the kind of stuff we normally do. All I knew was that it ended at the end if the Kiriwhakapapa track, which was basically a hiking track in dense native bush. I didnt take any pix as it was dark and slippery. We got to the campsite at after 10 pm and at least 2 hours of hikeabke up some very steep inclines and probably in excess of 20 fallen trees to drag the bikes over. There have been a some really big storms recently. I had just bought a new Jetboil stash cooker so was super happy to have some hot liquid after 12 hours and 140+ kms. It packs up really well. The wind came up during the night a bit but I was all good. Chris’s tent was angled differently and was having issues. Both tents were Big Agnes. The fukka woke me at 6am to tell me he was going to break down his tent. He’s definitely on the spectrum. We were home by about 2pm so there was no hurry. A good tail wind all the way home, 295 kms in total and I was reamed. Must have been the hikeabike. I really enjoy the comfort of the Big Agnes but the set-up and break down gives me the shits. It gives you so much protection but damn a bivvy sack rules if you are racing and have reasonable cover. If not racing then I will take the BA and the cooker. Some photos of the boring shit below.

I was going to ride Sunday to drop my ballot off until noticing that there was only one candidate for one race, probably should have dropped it off anyway without voting for them.

Kiddo did at least 6/8 without the towee. Also so nice to have.

We “raced” the last 3 miles him smashing it at about 10mph… which is the limit of his gearing.

Did an urban gravgrav as I tend to do on a Sunday, only the bicycle changes. Rode past the jail in Mt Crawford. Took in the mtb trail networks at Waimapihi, Mt Vic and Mt Crawford.

True confessions. I put some c-bros cleats on some shitty old shoes I had lying around cos I think the shoes I was using were causing a callous on my toe. The next day the right shoe started squeaking, so I hit it with some silicone and took some oil with me incase it started again. It did…. Then after a while I thought I could feel movement in the pedal. I thought, Oh well, my bad for using shitty c-bros candies. Probably gonna shit they selves. Even tho I know they are all lube up and barely used. Id certainly never ride far from home on them. Anyway, I look down and imagine the chainwheel does not look that straight. Stop. Oops. Crank was about to fall off. Thankfully my multi tool has the big fat Allen key needed…. Its the carbon sram force one you have to pull off with a rubber tube ; )
