It's Electric! A thread for e-bike things.

Yeah, 250 W hub motor with a 284 Wh battery. It gets me through my ~25 miles, 2000 ft commute at 80% assist.

So I did completely moos the point. Thank you

I kinda want to find a Chub label for the hub.

Are you charging it at work? I’m sort of curious about the e-road bikes just because my e-bike is such a janky boat anchor lol 250W probably goes further than I think when bike + rider isn’t a zillion pounds.

I guess I should have specified those are round trip numbers. That usually gets me home with around 20% battery left, but sometimes low power mode will kick in on the last half mile.

I spent some time trying to optimize the amount of assist to get me there and back on one charge. A second charger might be in my future, but I think panniers might be first.

these concealed e-bikes are really cool especially if people don’t wanna be whisked around not trying anything. the updated Mahle motors are even more energy efficient which is cool

@yonderboy have you looked at getting the range extender? at the last shop i worked at i had a few customers claim they could ride a century and have juice to spare with the range extender, but i doubt they were doing 1000 feet of climbing every 10 miles like you

(maybe this is better in the cargo biek thread but ) So my new job situation is .5 mile away from Wayjay’s school which is a 6ish mile MUP ride from our house. My work schedule jibes perfectly with school drop off/pick up. I think a Yuba spicy curry is probably the correct answer but dang I don’t want to spend that much. Checking out the Blix genie bike, seems slightly less crappy than a rad wagon but still seems pretty crappy. WWTBD?

edit: This crappy bike Packa Genie Cargo eBike

What grade is he in? How does he feel about riding? Get him his own ebike? Seems like he might be getting too big for the back of a cargo bike?

To me, the appeal of the Gain was that the motor doesn’t have any drag when it’s not engaged. I use the motor for commuting, but just use it as a regular bike on the weekends.

Sometimes the app tells me it has a range of 112 mi, but it seems random. I’ll probably get a second charger before I give up my second bottle cage for the range extender, though.

He’s 12, 7th grade. Dude is overly cautious so I’m not sure how he’d do riding on his own. He loves riding our MTB tandem so I don’t think he’d be (too) embarrassed… actually maybe we could try the idea out on the tandem. Would have to figure out what to do with his heavy ass backpack and stuff.

I mean like you could ride with him? Together. Maybe him on ebike? Idk. The REI one that was one bong is perfectly good and could haul a backpack etc no problem. My 11yo rides it around the neighborhood, but I wouldn’t let him out on streets alone with it. But bike path with me? Sure.

I’d love to ride bikes together with him. The last two blocks before the school is kind of bananas at pick-up so I’d worry about that.

We’re going to start looking at e-bikes for sup’s 18mi round trip commute now that her mat leave is ending soon. It’d be nice to have something that’s comfortable for both riding to work and babby/kid hauling, so thinking a long tail? Seems like benno boost and yuba are the main options?

xtracycle too. my partner loves hers. if you’re a bay arean you can test ride one.

The New Wheel has a monthly subscription program you can do and ride a bunch of bikes for cheap.

Where can I test ride one? I’m in San Jose

Local shop is getting a Yuba Kombi 5E in next week and we’re gonna give that a test ride at least.

For e-bikes should, is it worth the premium to get new (with shop support) or can I be looking at used?

Final follow up on my Upway purchase. Not the smoothest of transactions with the bike arriving without the accessory bag that normally contains the pedals, charger, and keys. To their credit, they made it all good and their customer service was easy to deal with. A new 4A Bosch charger (pretty sure that bike comes with the 2A version) and some Odyssey twist PC pedals showed up the following week, and a new key arrived a little over a week after that. Only getting one key was a bit of a bummer, but ordering another key directly from Abus was pretty easy after verifying the first replacement worked and only cost $13 including FedEx shipping. Their freight shipper was great.

Overall, 4/5 stars and I’d still recommend them.
