Do they suggest radial lacing?

They do. That’s how they built my 20ā€ front wheel.

Had them build it for me, $45 labor was a no brainier.

Battery and controller show up today, hoping to do some work Friday.

Building it up and riding it those first couple of times is so fun atmo.

I’ve been having bad thoughts about building up a fast mini velo with my currently unused Grin kit. Thankfully the frame under consideration is out of stock at the moment.

Interesting. I trust their judgement but have also seen so many radial e-bike wheels twist themselves into oblivion.

That’s zero cross in the picture but it’s not quite radial

Guess I roached my rear rotor on the marin e-mtb in one resin pad set (PNW winter). Feel the lip real easy.
Then I buy some HS2 rotors, centerlock, thinking that might help. But forgot it is centerlock, so not easy to just port over the magnet like 6 bolt does. Anyone know if the TRP centerlock magnet is compatible with the HS2 and the shimano sensor? May just pick one up at Fanatik to see (cant find it on Q or BTI).

so is this just the evolution of tied and soldered? i guess they can still pivot about the elbow but they’re so short and probably tensioned to all get out… i am wary of this- i feel like tangentially opposed forces are important

As far as spoke tension goes it should be the same

Ya, and not doing head in spokes/ wrapping the spokes around the flanges for extra contact makes me feel bad too. That said I also bought a radial laced grin wheel built exactly how they build it, and it’s been boring and fine. They build with the unfuckable 2.4mm elbows and that’s just super strong.

It’s not radial unless the spokes point at the center of the axle!

Boring and fine is 100% what I want for my ebike commuter car replacement. Reliability.

That said, I’m a bike guy and just about any other long tail wouldn’t do. I rode a tern and it was a laughable experience. Truly a bike shaped object.

The Xtracycle rode like a BIKE. But I splurged on the Grin kit because they are supposed to be ā€œthe bestā€ and over engineered so hopefully bombproof for years to come.

Probably also would have been happy with a Yuba or CYC mid drive kit.

Having about three years on a Grin all axle front hub kit and just a few months so far on a Bosch mid-drive, at least for me, I don’t think either is better than the other, just different.

The Grin kit is quieter and it’s nice having the drivetrain separate from the motor, but that motor makes the front of the bike very heavy and I lose the advantage of gear reduction going up steep hills. The Bosch kit responds better to lower cadence, either from a stop or just in general. That might be something that can be fixed on the Grin kit with more tuning and/or the different PAS BB kit I never installed. The bummer about the Bosch bike is it’s got to go to a dealer for any electric service. Neither is fun to pedal with assist turned off.

The respective bikes they’re on make a bigger difference than the kit, atmo. Strangely enough, both ended up weighing within a pound of each other (between 79-80 lbs) after being all kitted out with bags and racks and such. I’ve liked the Boost more overall, which is probably not shocking considering it’s designed to be an ebike vs a $500 Raleigh cycletruck with a bunch of heaving electric stuff strapped to it.

Hmmm this interesting. What was so bad about the Tern? If we have another kid soon enough that I was schlepping two kids in seats I would probably get a GSD but are they that wonky?

I didn’t hate the tern we rented once. Wife hated it.
