It's Electric! A thread for e-bike things.

sup absolutely loves her 1.2 (rigid fork and front rack) it’s a great spec for the price. i’d rather it not have a freewheel hub drive motor but it got delayed a lot and they gave us more off every time we politely asked what the current timeline was.
then they just sent us a bigger chainring and a new chain and freewheel after enough people told them they needed a taller gear for 20xbig wheels. the new chainring was better than the original and she didn’t have that many miles on it so we have a spare half-drivetrain now

I see em all over town, but it looks like REI pulled the plug on em finally a month or so ago

So I test drove these $10,000 riese & muller ebikes today. Anything comparable out there?

They are so slick and the more pricy motor hits until 28mph. It is downright ridiculous lol.

The R&M is def best in class as far as features and ride quality. If you’re ok compromising on one or both of those then there are cheaper alternatives like the Urban Arrow or Trek. I’m personally super interested in Muli and Yoonit but they’re a lot smaller.

I lust after a Load 75, but the entry price is so astronomically high I can’t justify even thinking about spending that

struggling to differentiate their models

75 cm long cargo area, 60 cm cargo area

Load has front and rear suspension.

Transporter doesn’t.

The 4 designation is fancy new Bosch electronics that are way too much for me. Like electronic immobilizer and stuff…

I’d be into the trek with just the front fork tbh. Anyway it’ll be a year at least if I’m paying full price before we can consider buying one, but knowing me I’ll find someone getting rid of one for half price.

I know we have one electro hase pino on tarck and that hits a cargo tandem angle which nothing else does.

Carrie looks nice, has a kid seat option and the same Bosch motor

We’re gonna get sup on an e-bike for her commute— flat 9mi each way. Needs lights, rack, etc. So far she has liked the power delivery of a mid-drive Gazelle, but I’ve heard torque sensing hub motors can be just as good. A few people have also recommended the spec commuters (but I forget which specific model they liked). She doesn’t specifically have a “budget” but wants to get used in order to save some amount of money. Any other recs?

I literally never ridden an e-bike lol

Spec may be the Vado SL, and the EQ have rack and lights.

Get whatever has a Bosch drive unit and is comfy for her. Hub motors can feel almost as good but you’ll never beat the level of service you get with Bosch.

Do you have time to talk about our Cromulent Savior Kona Dew-E?

I’ve been using the Mahle hub drive system that Orbea uses. The only weakness I’ve found is on steep hills, but that’s not a problem for you.

I saw one in the shop today, but it didn’t have any lights! But looking online, some do.

Currently trying to decipher the gazelle model names/numbers. Why do companies do this?

Vado was nice in the shop, very slick. Feels like you’re paying a premium for all that. Don’t really want a Bluetooth bike though

RE: vado SL, this seat binder will creak and slip always.

cables and hose are a nightmare, both run under the motor unit so you have to drop the motor to replace housing or brake hose.
Lights can’t be moved without extending the wiring harness.

I don’t know where this goes. Been trying to get this shot for two days.

Think I’m gonna try to buy this. Good idea or great idea? Any red flags about battery degradation/range? I figure once I have a chassis I can tinker with that stuff, anyway.

If it were like 3k cheaper it would be ok. Those mods aren’t good for the motors and also most shops will refuse service on them. This could be fine but the diagnostic tools are only available to service centers so if you do run into issues it may be hard to diagnose. Besides that it’s a nearly 10 year old full suspension bike, which is an automatic no go from me regardless.

If you’re in it for the dither, get something you can put your own motor on

I was about to say, I would not buy an e-bike that the owner admitted to “hot-rodding”. The idea that they think it like it around 24mph suggests that lots of stuff on the bike is probably roached (I’m particularly interested in the condition of that NuVinci hub lol)

As an aside, big shartmo here, e-bikes don’t need to be “fast”. I was sort of disappointed that my e-kit wasn’t faster but after I rode it more I realized that increased top speed is more of a liability if you ride in town around drivers on bike infrastructure. It’s perfectly good to get up to a 15-16mph cruising speed on a big-ass bike with minimal effort.
