It's Electric! A thread for e-bike things.

One of my guys recently built a Bosch equipped bike and he went with Lezyne for his lights. He researched it a bunch and seems happy with the choice. Worth including them in the search.

i just bought the niterider ebike light and it is incredibly bright. happier with that than the iq-x e that i took off.
they both came with bare wires that i added spade connectors to.

Yeah, the pigtails needed to connect to the motor unit are pretty widely available…Q has a couple different lengths.

It’s a bit difficult to pick out the better engineered options from the rebadged white label stuff that’s everywhere. YT has been sort of helpful but most of the more rigorous reviews are in German and model names don’t weather auto translate too well.

So, fun thing I learned tonight. The six bolts mounting a Bosch motor to a frame are Torx Plus 40, or “IP40”… not standard Torx. Hopefully this saves someone else some…uh, discovery time.

why does that exist? what’s wrong with torx?

Discovery as in using the wrong bit and stripping bolts or just why the fuck doesn’t this bit fit in the fucking fastener?

Well, the standard T40 bit fits, but felt very loosey-goosey. A check of a support doc uncovered the difference.

I’m sure you could get away with loosening the bolt, but you’d have to hold the wrench against the bolt while doing it. And it would likely start slipping/stripping when you are torquing it in.

The really annoying thing is no one seems to carry Torx-Plus bit sets locally (auto stores, Harbor Freight, etc.)

Dunno, but feels very Phillips vs JIS.

Fuck me, I got some bolts that my torx bit fits unnervingly loosely. They may be torx plus. I have been cranking them down hard successfully, but I have to make sure the bit is pushed in hard and straight. Kinda negates the point of buying torx.

First response in reddit thread is very apt:
“Just another hole I jam an Allen key into”

Seems to be driven(ha) by manufacturer needs, not consumer.

These folks are trying to sell them so grain of salt and all but:

edit: And OFC e-torx plus also exist. Thankfully all my cars and bikes and stuff are too old to need any of these.

My dad wants to get a folding e bike. Didn’t someone here work for some company that made those? I have no idea where to start in helping him. I feel like lectric is the folding one I see the most.

If you’re not too concerned with a test ride, Upway has a bunch of used/overstock options:

That Upway link is a good place to start to see what’s out there. The Tern Vektron is another option if 3 bongs and up is in the budget.

https://www.ternbicycles.com/en/bikes/472/vektron

p sure that was @motorbacon and i regret not buying one when it had the steep tarck discount.

Paid perineal $$$s for this for volts. Came in an envelope wrapped in bubbles by itself. Can’t figure out what the switch do? Same blinking both sides (blinking comes from my system)

Any thoughts?

It’s an option to connect the light using just bare wire. You insert the wire ends into the holes above the switch, then move the switch to the opposite spot to cinch the wires in place.
