ITT winter bike/biking questions

selling a bike right now would probably not happen.
seeing as how no one would want to buy a bike right before winter
ebayyy
i dont want to ship it.
Isn’t it coming to you packed? How hard could it be?

So you would rather ride and tear up a brand new bike that is poorly suited for winter use than sell said brand new bike (which cost you nothing) to buy an appropriate bike?

Y. where u from yo.

Like I mean where in canada?

Shipping is a cinch, atmo. Pass the globe and get some appropriate real estate.

Also, wtb saddle, wtf.

shipping isnt a hassle, i have plenty of bike boxes even.

i think i found a person to buy each of my globes locally now tho.
so once they each give me a deposit,
ill order them,
sell them,
???
profit.

ATMO: Get a decent 27" wheel bike and build it up with 700c and Planet Bike Cascadias, studded or at least CX tires, and gear inches in the low to mid 60s. Don’t forget to drill a drain hole in the BB shell and do the J.P. Wiegle Framesaver or boiled linseed oil treatment. A modern sealed headset or at least a sealed Tange top locknut is a good idea, as is cartridge BB, a dab of paint in every chrome allen wrench hole, touch-up paint on the frame + wax, marine grease in every location where grease is needed (water and salt-proof), and a galvanized chain (KMC Rustbuster) plus regular Boeshield T-9.

This could all be accomplished after selling only one of your trophy bikes, with cash left over. Or, if you want to spend more money and have a brand new winter bike that can do fixed/SS or geared, the Crosscheck seems to be a very nice option. And if you’re willing to go the MTB route you have many more options, though not all are fixed-capable, obviously. Either way, the same prep advice for the old ten-speed conversion applies, where needed.

yeah, thats some good advice.
im going to wait on this dude who says he wants to buy my other Globe bike.
if he does, ill have $1k and just buy a semi-decent 90’s road bike (if i ever find one!) and put fenders and CX tires on it.
otherwise, its lookin like a crosscheck.

i got a little bit of time before i need to make any decisions tho

You’re not really looking for a 90s bike though (unless it’s touring, MTB or CX), clearances started getting too tight for big tires and fenders. Also, studded tires FTW, seriously. They’re spendy but a set should last you several seasons here in SLC as you’ll only need it a dozen or so times. I went like 5 years without a dedicated winter bike just because you can get by on whatever, winters here aren’t that harsh. Looking back I don’t know why I waited so long to build up a proper winter bike. Now I LOVE riding on snowy days, I don’t worry at all about traction or being able to stop, I stay mostly dry, and I feel like a bad ass instead of feeling like I could fall any second.

Just do something like this. I think it was like 200 bucks total to build this bike and I love the shit out of it.

This winter it’s getting a long reach rear brake and a set of spds. The only thing I wasn’t totally crazy about were the platforms, though they allow me to wear some warm ass boots.

?

I endorse powergrips for warm ass boot winter riding. It is about the only time I use anything accept clipless. The clipless boots are too expensive and not really all that nice.

Now I have a job I think I’m going to make my Pake a winter dude, fixed gear with knobbies and platforms

Last year I didn’t use studs for winter but this year I will have a studded up front and at cross tire in the rear.

This year I have a Fuji Espree that I am building up and the other parts I have are PB full fenders, last year I rode clipless and was fine but I found booties at the co-op so I’m going to try them or go to platform pedals and winter boots. For gear I ran 42 X 17 fixed and I might go a bit lower this winter. In Edmonton we get dry snow and not too much of it, but they don’t plow anything but bus routes. I find setting up the bike fine, it just getting used to the -30 days that I know are coming… fuck I need to leave Canada.

you need to leave alberta…

semi-decent 90’s bikes are plentiful. they do not work with 'cross tires and fenders. (which is a lousy combination anyways cuz the latter just jam up with snow.)

that alan you posted looks like it would work out for you. good deal too.

alright, i think im buying this today

in SLC its either sunny and snowless in the city
or its blizzarding

i think this bike will work great on the few days that itll be really bad
if not, then i have an MTB (is this a good bike for mountains/trails? or is this for jumping)

the kid wants $350
comes with a cassette in case i want to convert to gears also

that looks rather dirt jump-ish, coz short stem and low standover. which is fucking badass anyways. but i’m not very well versed on mtbs.

fuck it.
im only going to be riding MTB with my parents.

reviews online say its ok for all around

dirtjumping looks fun as fuck. check out some of the vids here: http://www.pinkbike.com/video/

if i had any money i’d buy that bike off of you if you didn’t like it, instead of dropping 750 on a kona shred. but i know you’re not fond of shipping bikes and i’m piss broke anyways.

Speaking of winter riding, what gearing do you all ride?

Right now I’m at 46x16 but what gearing would you recommend? I was thinking of either getting a 19t cog or a lower chainring(30’s), but i’m having trouble finding small chainrings

this is what is going to happen I hope.
