today it rained in the city and snowed in the mountains, so it got me thinking about cold weather clothing.
which led to thinking about cold weather bikes.
i want to get fenders and a basket and use this for winter/snow/rain
what fenders will work best? it has really low clearances
whats a good basket/flatbed for the front
Mods, change name of this thread to “Winter Cycling 09/10” for continuity’s sake plz?
Was thinkin’ of starting this thread after it was 35 degrees on my commute this morning.
EDIT: I loves my cross tires (ritchey speedmax or kenda kwicks) for winter riding. I’d just mod some sks/pb cascadias fenders to fit up in there. Clip ons and all that never quite work right.
some people say 23mm tires are best for snow because they cut through down to the pavement, but that is a load of shit. at least around here, because the city can’t be fucked to plow the snow with any regularity. for when you have to run over hardpack snow, cross tires are the only way to go, although doing roadrunner/wb cartoon style starts is fun every once in a while.
i highly doubt the globe will be any good for winter commuting. you’d be better off selling it and getting a cross frame or my personal favorite, an older road frame of decent quality sized for 27" tires. when fitted with 700c’s, they usually can take up to a 40-45mm tire or 35mm tires with ample fender clearance.
and full fenders are a must. i don’t think it really matters which brand you go with. i’ve been using SKS chromoplastics for the last two winters with no problems, though they did shatter a bit in a spill. i have a friend with the planet bike versions and they seem decent, though he doesn’t ride in the winter.
i’m gonna ride my cross through the winter, probably a little bit of riding on the schwinn that’s waiting to be used. also because fixed in the winter rox my sox off.

Grats on the bike!
It snowed twice up in Research park today - whiskey tango foxtrot. Wasn’t it like 80 yesterday?
I’m contemplating building up a Salsa La Cruz for winter commuting and fun around the SLC.
EDIT:
idk, if i found something like this at a yardsale for like $75-100 i would probably pick it up.
but idk if i want to spend that much on a bike i’ll hardly ride thats all old and beat up

selling a bike right now would probably not happen.
seeing as how no one would want to buy a bike right before winter
ebayyy
