Living Car-Free

i’m not lucky enough to be in biking distance between school and work.

Just sayin, they’re really god damn ugly. :colbert:

i wish i could live the lifestyle but it gets too hot and too cold. plus, its not bike friendly enough. i wish i lived in a cool metropolitan area where everything was a bike ride away.

I did it in Seattle, not a chance is Les Bois. It’s as far to get out of my neighborhood as my whole commute was in Seattle.

car free. looking to get a trailer for grocery shopping/bigger errands. kinda need a bike that isn’t broken first though. soon.

Kinda of hard to do in the NJ, but I’ll go two weeks or so without driving. Just occasionally need it for errands, so maybe I’ll do the zipcar thing once this car dies (which will be in about 10yrs).

(by the by, this subforum is pretty good in the bikeforums.net)

should i go for this?

no, i hear that the small wheel really sucks

31 years, no car yet. The only time I ever need rides is on bowling night, cuz carrying bowling ballS (plural) and shoes in a mess bag for 13 miles sucks.

Everything in my town is within about a 15 mile trip or less. That’s at the extreme outside - most trips are in the 1-5 mile range. I used to work in Camarillo, which is 45 miles away, for a 90 mile RT by car, five days a week. Never again. Now I have a 3 mile RT bike commute and am at that “getting crafty” stage of figuring out how to use my bike for pretty much everything.

Which, since I have two small kids and a Wike trailer and currently only have a fixed gear, means hauling a trailer with my FG. We don’t have huge hills in town but even relatively shallow grades get really tiring when you climb them long enough. But, when I ask my older boy (the only one who talks yet) if he wants to go in the car or the trailer, he’s always said “trailer!” every time. So what you gonna do?

I’m currently building up a “yuppie” Xtracycle with my old early 90s Kona Lava Dome to use as my kiddie mobile. And I’m thinking of putting something like “One Less Minivan” on the trailer, that’ll mess with people.

I’m in no position to be preachy about being car free, but considering I only use my car maybe once per month now, I’m really loving the lifestyle. And so are my wife and kids, which is really the point.

Steve

Man I kinda want to have kids so I can tow them in a trailer so when I’m doing my usual talking to myself routine while riding people think I’m talking to the kids.

Remember all those folding bikes you were throwing up on the jackass thread? That’s exactly what they’re for.

I wish i could be car free. cars are bitches. gas is expensive ($4,15/gal here), and cops are so bored around here. i got pulled over for running a yellow light. seems like i’d be left alone if i was on a bike. unfortunately, everything around here is so damn far away, and the roads are absolutely abysmal and people loathe the idea of bicycles outside of MUP’s and parks. public transportation is unheard of around here, since so many of the cities in the metro detroit area are snobby and loathe the idea of people being able to enter their town without being able to afford a motor vehicle (i shit you not), plus the auto industry, which was once powerful, lobbied successfully against the implementation of public transportation to promote the car. this was all fine and dandy, until people started losing jobs, our economy became the worst in the union, and gas got more expensive. now everything has just gone and fucked itself in the ass. blah. sorry for the rant.

help me i’m stuck in suburban, auto-centric hell.

Michigan?

There’s always room for more here in California… get a one-way Amtrak ticket?

Steve

Yeah, Michigan. I actually have plans to go to California once i’m done with my undergrad, unless I go to Germany.

Y’all are a bunch of pussies!

“Wah wha wha! The roads are too crappy! The cars are fast and scary! It’s to far! It’s too cold! Wah wah wah!”

Somebody call the fuckin wambulance!

I haven’t owned a car in 10 years, but our household is now officially car-free. The lady’s car stopped running a while ago and she finally donated it.
