mavic cxp 23 vs. open pro

i know open pro’s pretty awesome, but i’ve had good experiences with cxp23s, but none with open pros to compare. does anyone have any thoughts on how worth it the monetary savings of getting a 23 instead of an open pro are?

The CXP23 has a slightly higher profile, doesn’t have eyelets, and is a little heavier. 480grams v. the Open Pro’s 430 grams (according to their website.)

The biggest drawback are no eyelets.

well, it has single eyelets. i rode a pair of wheels on 23s on some of the worst roads i’ve ever ridden on and never once got a wobble or anything either, so i know they’re strong enough for some abuse. i just wonder if the extra strength is worth the extra money if i’m not going to be doing anything too crazy…

50g will not break a deal for me, ever.

Then no, the extra cash probably isn’t worth it for you. You could probably find the Open Sport less (~ $35) if you want even cheaper.

hadn’t thought of that, i’ll compare the stats on all three wheels.

iirc someone told me the main advantage of open pro is ceramic brake surfaces? but i haven’t seen that on mavic’s site. also wasn’t looking for it.

yeah, i think i’ll go with the 23. open sport looks all right, but it’s a little flatter than i like…even though i’m over deep v’s, i still like a little profile. otherwise, they look pretty level in all areas.

a719 looks good, too, but not from the perspective of trying to balance cost, too.

A719 is a touring rim, tough as nails but heavier. You can get the Open Pro with ceramic brake surfaces, but it costs a hella lot more than the standard one. And it’s not like it’s a HUGE difference.

oh, yeah, the weight difference was big enough to give me pause. still, i’ve ridden deep v’s and with the right deal on a wheel i’d run a trispoke/aerosp0k type wheel.

Presumably, the CXP23 is just a shorter version of the CXP33 which I run. The CXP33 is my favorite Mavic rim. Word on the street is that they’re a bit more durable than OPs for heavy guys like me. FWIW, I have a set of both, so I’m not just repeating bullshit I read as I often do. I’ve way more miles on the CXP33 though.

Velocity Aeroheads are about the same weight as Open Pros and have a semi-aero profile.
Cambria has them for $40, silver 32h. I think they don’t have them in stock and you have to wait a little while, but shit is cheap.

Also, I got an e-mail: HOTDEALS9 for an extra 10% off, so like $36 each.

mmm, i’ll check on the eyelets, i know aeroheads are possibly cheaper some places. i have enjoyed the 23s though and might go with those, though if i shop around, there may be places with good deals on open pros.

also, i’m wondering where there are dimensions, i didn’t see any on the mavic site. compare the heights of different rims. i like all the way boxy for some bikes, but not for mine. but that’s a minor aesthetic quibble.

it might be the higher profile on the 33s…i guess the 23s are slightly higher than the ops. of course, i don’t know if that’s bullshit, it’s one argument why deep section rims are good. but of course, people also say aero and under 40mm (where veeps sit) that argument doesn’t hold, so i don’t know about the durability argument either. i know mine have held up through lots of abuse. but my front one’s on its deathbed and i’m getting ready to get my lady some new shoes, if you catch my drift.

so, yeah, if that argument holds, though, 33s might be better than OPs for durability, but i’m not sure that’d work for 23s as well. and i don’t even know how true that basic premise is.

looks like they’re not eyeletted. even a single eyelet i can deal with more than none. i mean, if i knew i couldn’t get any that were eyeletted that would be one thing, but i can so it’s probably best if i do.

No biggie. I like 'em for the price.

Mavic lists the CXP 23 as non-eyeletted.

What hubs are you building on?

hmm, i saw single eyelet.

i’m rebuilding my front wheel which is a fucked to shit veep and miche primato lf.

The open pro’s aren’t ceramic surfaced but the open pro CD’s(I think the initials are cd) are.

Correcto.

The difference is what? like 15 skins, less if you get a deal on the rim. I would go for the open pro’s, I love mine, and they are tough as nails and pretty light. but thats just me.

CD stands for couche-dure which implies that it’s been hard-anodized, ceramic is something different (and about $10 more per).
