Miguel's fat-tired fopmobile
ok hotshits
what is the downside to big fat tires on a race frame? with no fenders/650x42ish tires, road crank fits fine.
Sloppy brakes if you have to run super long sidepulls to do it?

My evidence is anecdotal but 25mm GP4000 is faster than 42 Babby shoes. Not that some sweet supple fat tires are not fast in their own right but if the goal is absolute minimal wattage cost then the sweet spot for rubber is well under 30mm. Also aerodynamics. A 23-25mm tire is going to crush a fat tire.

Apparently regular 57mm long reach will do it:

Would a brake swap to short reach for 700c even work there?

On that frame it does. He said it was built for 38s and he has to let some air out to cram 42s in there.

those are some fuckoff tight clearances

It’s a Bishop, what do you expect?

NJS clearances and form over function forever.

I think your brake bridge placement and fork dimensions would have to be either custom or reallly lucky in order to fit 650bx42 (or even 38) under a 57mm rim brake… The alternative being those uber-long reach tektro joints which seem like they perform so shitty as to just be a nonstarter for me-- I’ve definitely thought about trying to do this to an old road frame too, but the brake thing is always what brings me back to my senses.

edit: i’ve got an 80s trek with 57mm Shimanos that have some room left in the bottom of the slot in my basement, I’ll check the clearance and rim reach with my NFE wheelset later this eve and post pics.

The fork is what really kills it, especially with any more offset than normal.

paul racers?

This is true. Hard to hang with race bikes but that probably also has a lot to do with the rest of the bike. A caveat: you still haven’t tried the EL, Braden!

since this is my thread can i just say im really tired of photos of people holding their bikes above their head

My daily has the super long reach tektros front and rear and with a pad swap they have been great. Plenty of stopping power for around town and occasional oh shit situations, no clue how they would do on long sustained downhills or other randish situations but I can’t complain. Also I’m 260lbs so probably even better if you’re not a clyde.

Fopdate: Babyshoe EL actually clears the stays on my '87 Trek 330, brake bridge is too high so 57mm Shimano calipers don’t reach the rim at the bottom of the slots. However, if the bridge was lower, these calipers actually look like they’d give an acceptable amount of clearance, even better with 38s. Didn’t do the front, but fork clearance (height and width) is better than rear in this bike.

Photo below is the caliper, with pads in the bottom of slots, and the pads on the rim (best case scenario clearance). I’m sure no one gives a fuck, ha.

The construction, materials, and geometry of my race bike is damn similar to my CG. I doubt the EL with tubes are much faster than the standard without. Either way I’ll stick to 25s for the local crit series.

Actually… Scratch that. I’ll totally race the CG with babbyshoes for shits and giggles once this coming season.

What non-drop bars do yunz like for basketbike? I probably like some sweep but not too wide and not too short a reach.

I’ve had the most success pulling unmarked bars out of LBS parts bins honestly. Finding something without too much sweep is hard enough, lots of cruisery bars barely have room for grips and a lever let alone shifters n such.

MAP/Ahearne bars are real nice.

This has been my strategy.

Origin8 Space Off Road bars I like because they don’t have much forward sweep before they curve back (contrast with regualr version of the Space Bar). It keeps the bar clamp area as the forward-most point near the basket and keeps the controls and cable back a bit and less interference with loads. BUT I’m a lot shorter than you and I expect you might have more vertical clearance above the basket than I do on my bikes.

Actually, I looked again at my pics, and you don’t really gain that much from the Space O.R. bar. But it does work well if you have a longer stem or long top tube.
