mtb/cx/whatever pedals

To answer an earlier question, I hate Eggbeaters because they’re cheap disposable garbage. I don’t care if they have great customer service and that they’ll happily rebuild your pedal for free if it’s under warranty (it’s $45 if it’s two years or more older) - your pedals shouldn’t be breaking and they shouldn’t have to constantly go back to the manufacturer for service. Notice that stories about breaking a Time or SPD are basically non-existent, add in the fact that Crank Brothers feel like shit with their zillion degrees of float (I guess some may prefer this, although I have no idea why), and you understand why I think their pedals suck.

in reading it again my question was vague at best. essentially i have specialized mtb shoes that use the 2 hole style cleat for my SPD’s. It sounds as though some Time pedals also use a two hole cleat which I assume will allow me to use these shoes with Time specific cleats.

The more I look around though I dont see many “SPD” 2 hole style pedals that weigh less than 300 grams for the pair[/quote]

There’s a few companies that do, but is it really worth bickering about 40 grams or so?

yes. i dont want to buy road specific shoes and i dont want heavy ass pedals/cleats that are overbuilt

315 close enough?

perfect!

But the four-sided entry and mud shedding abilities!

I think people buy eggbeaters because they look cool.

I have these. I like 'em. Also, here’s an idea from Graeme Obree:

Some dudes on mtbr.com say they roll out with a spare pair of 'beaters in their pack when they hit trails, because their eggbeaters break so often. They’re usually card-carrying members of the Crank Brothers Anti-Defamation League. I assume they have driveways jammed full of Daewoos.

Hm, I like the look and way those are designed. Having a better platform under foot would probably be better for these longer rides I have been doing lately. Halbritt, have you ever unintentionally unclipped? That’s the only problems I have with my current SPD’s and I ate shit because of it yesterday. Given my current pedals are free and pretty old/used M535s. I am definitely considering those A520s but unclipping when you pull up on the front to stop is horrifying.

Only 3 things can cause that really. Worn cleats, bad tension settings, and foot rotation. I wouldn’t be surprised if you swung your ankle around without actually thinking about it.

The one perk that ATAC’s have is the resistance before you unclip, which is actually one of the reasons why I hated mine. There was float there, but it was a more bound up type of float. I don’t really know how to describe it. It really messed with my left knee though, so I went back to SPD.

I use a brake to stop.

I love spd, but racing cross I had multiple instances where my cleats/pedals were jammed with enough mud that I could not clip in… not fun in a race… so I grabbed some eggbeater SL’s and have been rockin them ever since… I’ve been able to clip in every time… but the floaty feeling isnt as nice.

I think the springs might be messed up my current pedals. The tension on the left pedal even at its highest isn’t very strong. They are fine just pedaling around and whatnot but when I backpedaled is when it happened so it may have very well been my foot rotating.

Halbritt, I normally run a brake too but the past couple weeks I haven’t had one because I had to replace my old bars and didn’t think about my old lever being too small so I have one on order from my lbs. I’ve just had to back pedal and skid stop some here lately and that led to me unintentionally unclipping. I just want to make sure the next set of pedals I purchase is better about unclipping then my current pair in the case that I do back pedal or skid any. All this being said, there is a chance my unclipping was just rider error. Aside from what I asked earlier, how does the platform feel under foot rather than having just a small pedal or nearly nothing underfoot as with other clipless pedals?

The A520s feel nice next to some M540s I have. The springs seem to be quite a bit stronger as well perhaps because they are “road” pedals. If you have uneven tension on your existing pedals, lubricate the springs a bit.

Eggbeaters, but I admit it is a tradeoff. I like the feel, the float, everything. If they break (maybe I have been lucky so far with a few hundred miles of seriously rocky, technical central NM singletrack under their belt) I’ll buy new ones.

I just hate the feel of SPDs and haven’t tried anything else.

I’m switching to clipless. I just bought some time atac aliums, so we’ll see how this goes. I’m excited!

Thanks for the advice Halbritt, I’ll try squirting a few drops of Tri-Flow into the springs. As for the pedals, I’m definitely liking the idea having a “road style” pedal but still being able to used a recessed cleat. I’m highly considering them now.

I don’t think I would like all that float that the eggbeaters give but who knows. Just seems like it would feel squirrelly to me.

Wallet, you’ll love clipless. It is so much more convenient and you get so much better power transfer, especially with your upstroke and keeping your spin in a good circular motion.

This is the worst part of riding clipless offroad- getting used to being attached to the pedals. It took me about a month or two of riding to get accustomed to the feeling of being clipped in when approaching techy ups or downs.

After years of riding road pedals (Look, Shimano) I found the Eggbeater float pretty unnerving. But now I don’t notice it. I switched from Attacks because of mud and snow clogging.

Crank bros service is very good in my experience. I sent in one pair for a warranty fix and anther pair that I smashed one up riding rock gardens fixed.

I payed to ship out to them + $15 to fix the smashed. They completely rebuilt both pairs and payed the return shipping.
