New & Interesting Bike Campenaerts

Indoor is where they make all their money. I don’t think they could exist off outdoor cycling alone and they’ve already heavily invested in software. i think where they are struggling is that they’re trying to pay software/tech salaries off the income from their hard goods. The software isn’t paying for itself.

Sounds about right. That Walton money won’t last forever and indoor seems like it might be too competitive for them to make a reasonable margin on hardware. I’d ask if Stages is seeing similar issues with margin erosion, and shrinking overall indoor market, but I’d assume you are not at liberty to divulge.

Sometimes the best move is to take the L and shrink to a sustainable model.

Here I was thinking that they were ahead of the curve and had purchased speedplay as a means to increase their recurring revenue via cleat sales…

I went this way, enjoying it

there was a huge dip in smart bike sales after the covid boom, but they’ve actually been extremely steady through the summer, showing some good market recovery this year.

the indoor fitness market has rebounded fairly well after a very rough 2 years during covid and is returning to a growth period again.

wahoo with trainers was basically where we were at for a while with power meters. they were the only decent one for a while and enjoyed the fruits of that market, but a ton of competition has entered the arena. their bike also is not priced competitively right now.
kickr bike: $3,199-3,999 (lower price is on a refurb)
stages sb20: $2,499 (it’s out of stock right now so showing the old MSRP but assuming it’s staying at $2,499)
tacx bike: $2,799-3,199

I’ve got one and I am not a fan. I wear a 32mm watch and its about as big as I like.

my switch from 41 to warranty 45/46 replacement has been great for battery life. it’s big but different strokes, folks, etc. i cant imagine a 32mm watch getting great battery life if it even exists. almost took ferg up on a 51mm and i think that might be too big but a watch is a great gps device these days if you don’t need more routing other than “get me back”

I should clarify. My smart watch is a Wahoo Rival. My daily is a cool watch for very cool children. I find the Rival too big, ugly and heavy for daily use.

That’s hot. I’d buy a 139 sized model.

light, not going to rust, and fewer failure points seems good

Oooh I’m gonna see if I can go fondle one in person, they’re just down the street.

The only miss is not having holes at bottle-cage spacing, and maybe light mount holes somewhere (though the rack itself will provide some of that, folks want options!).
