It’s gotta be related to this generally. I think it would reduce the rack travel compared to the wheel. But why not have the rack just cantilevered off a non-suspended part, like maybe some bosses lower on the seat tube?
I followed a trail that intersected with a power line and I couldn’t figure out where it continued on the other side. I was wandering around staring at the map on my phone when I heard a buzzing sound. I looked up and saw the large timber rattler I was headed towards.
he just wants to be your friend!
If not spring why spring shaped
the checkout guys did an escape collective podcast special. they talked about this. they had some clever reason why. i can’t remember what it was, but the podcast never forgets.

Does the Trek have flex stays? That would explain having a pivoting rack mount.
scroll up - it’s a full squish gravel bike with a bearing mounted (?) rear rack
No, I get it. But Trek (and other brands) have started using flex seatstays on their short travel MTBs to eliminate a pivot.
If the chainstays are flexing significantly, you don’t want to attach a rigid, weighted rack to fixed points on the top and bottom of the stay. You want half of them to ‘float’ - and for that to work, you need all the connection points on hinges/bearings.
it’s got to have a lower pivot behind the chainring
It looks like they put drop bars on the previous gen XCO Supercaliber, atmo.
Yeah this is all true
if you attach it to the rear triangle
But why would you attach it to the bouncy bit to begin with?
To bring the weight lower I guess. Having bags hanging off your saddle is actually shitty for handling. On a rack is better, but even better is panniers style, lower still.
Probably to be able to carry a bit more weight than a dropper with a seat bag can handle.
Betting that rear rack is meant to carry, at most, a 10-12L dry bag - like one of these things:
yeah- flex stay refers to not having a pivot by the CS/SS. there’s still a lower pivot by the BB
If I knew how to meme I’d make a bell curve meme with panniers on both sides and butt rocket bikepacking bro in the middle.
There we go. Much obliged.
I don’t get the rack for bikepacking thing. Metal cracks, bolts rattle out, pannier plastic attachments break off. Soft bags for me thanks.
were gonna change your name to soft bags
