I’ve been off tarck for a bit mostly riding my friction or ss deadenders. Im building up a new dumb bike so I’ve gotten up to speed on some of the latest tech developments.

Is the bike industry totally fucking itself with the mass proliferation of proprietary standards now? Half the wheelsets for sale out there dont even obviously say what freehub driver they have now. Cranks have a billion spline to spider interfaces that seem to just be standard BCDs with extra steps. A bunch of whacky proprietary bar/stem/internal routing situations.

I know theres always a rich guy market, but the barrier to understanding what part to buy as a casual now seems to be much higher than a decade ago. Tons of proprietary wheelsets with God knows what freehub and bearings. At least with cup and cone you could be fairly sure your hubs would be serviceable.

I get that 102bcd XTR chainrings and a million other whacky things used to exist , but im so hesitant to put any money into some flash in the pan standard if I can help it. I can obviously still buy 104bcd cranks , dt350 hubs etc , but just seems like part soup out there.

Im like the 2nd youngest tarcker too before im accused of being a grumpy old man.

I have finally been putting some miles on that bike and I’ve been thinking about it. Nearly every other jock and roadie on the trail is on some sort of carbon this with proprietary this, proprietary that. That’s the normie shit now. Nerds are the only people who care about universal/standard parts or even having a stem and handlebar that are different pieces. If you are going to go to a dealer for every service, I guess it doesn’t really matter

I always have future proofing in mind. Friction brifters. Cable disc brakes. Pads that are pretty generic. 2 wheel sizes. Screw in BB with replaceable bearings. It is carbon but really has taken a hiding so far. If it ever breaks I will transfer it all onto another frame. Steel or ti. Steel is a PITA tho in wet climes. Rust never sleeps. If my brifters die I will likely be the first person to put downtube shifters on an OPEN UP. Maybe I should be prepping for this now.

We get these weird competing standards around every boom cycle. We don’t see cottered cranks, 141 BCD, threaded freehubs, or BB threadings that aren’t BSA. During the fixie boom, a lot of those old bikes came out of the dusty garage.

The industry has largely standardized around a few things, but we still get weird shit like DUB and T47.
