Normie bikes

Dang.

That was the last bike Marin ran out of so we stocked up. Have been slowly selling through. It’s an incredible bike for the price. Everyone who has one absolutely loves it.

2021 colorway is a nice improvement (along with the actual Tiagra hydro levers).

She rode two Norco bikes and a Kona Rove ST. The Norco search was here favorite so far. The main issue is the lack of hydro brakes on the search. Still looking for a place to ride Marin and Breezer. Hopes for that aren’t high.

the Nicasio Ridge is basically a normie Coffee Grinder as far as I can tell

It’s awhile away because he just bought a house and is also on the Covid mend but would love to start thinking about getting my dad on a new bike

Clydesdale roadie who got really into tris, sold his s-works for a sick tri bike and was training for an iron man when my mom got sick and their lives turned upside down.

He hasn’t ridden much in the last couple years as a result and just put the tri bike up on commission at the local shop and is hoping to spend </=$1k on some sort of rigid mtn bike for his 10mile round trip work commute and putzing around on local trails

The complete Jones complete has his eye but is about twice what he wants to spend. Complete from a shop is going to be the name of the game. What should be looking for?

Thinking I should maybe twist his arm into looking at something more all road. I think he’ll be missing the occasional corn field ride once the itch comes back and he’s on a mtn bike

This guy and have enough left over for a nice set of lights.

Surly Bridge Club?

I think it might be perfect

salsa journeyman maybe? does he care how heavy it is? and how fat of tires does he really want it to be?

i dont think he knows because hes a recovering carbon fiber everything and 23mm tires

i think he’ll be right at home with us on the 650x38-48 once he feels how nice tires are these days
journeyman is a great idea since he can buy in at the Claris level and have a lot of room and space for the inevitable dithering

Oh man the Indie 1 is probably my next sweet hybrid, especially if I can find one used in a couple of years.

can i post in here for myself, because i think i need a normie bike. i’m planning ahead for next summer when i’ll be able to afford it. here are qualifications

  • i am basically a perfect 54 in every bike ever and i have average dimensions, so anything custom would be a waste
  • this would be to replace a 2014-era Coffee Grinder with its original Ultegra and CX75 group
  • road-oriented with 30c tires, but figure 95% of miles will be road miles
  • fenders not required on this bike
  • i am di2-curious but also perfectly happy with mechanical
  • disc brakes preferred…some very steep/technical descents on the few gravel/dirt roads. i don’t need a full “gravel bike” as long as i can get 28s on there, though.
  • shimano please
  • fine to build up from frame

any suggestions? not looking for anything super balleur, just something that i can do 75 mile rides on. at this point my ultegra group needs to be replaced, the hubs are losing muster, and the frame is dented.

Jut about every endurance geometry bike (and many race geo ones) from the big guys clears 32mm tires these days.

But the right answer is a new coffee grinder.

Post your dent in the asplde thread if you want advice on how your frame is totally repairable :grinning:

Think I’ve settled on buying a complete and making a few changes instead of wasting time on a frame build-up when I really don’t need anything crazy.

Anyone have experience with the Norco Section? I’m considering it along with the Search XR—both in steel. The latter I can test ride, the Section I would have to order.

Pros for the Section are shorter chainstays (415 vs 430 on the Search), threaded BB instead of press fit, and I can get it for significantly cheaper.

Search XR pros are better colors, 46/30 crankset, hydros come stock, and more clearance/650b possibilities. Not sure I care a lot about that last part—the Section clears 35s and that’s probably all I need. I’m running 700x38s right now and they feel a bit too slow to spin up.

Thoughts? Also open to other suggestions, these are just what I’ve found that are readily available.
