NYC Wheel Builders?

I may throwdown for a new set of rims in the near future, not sure what yet, but I’m curious if anyone from the area knows of any extremely reliable builders? I’d rather not learn this skill while I only have one rideable bike, because I really don’t think I have the patience for it and don’t wanna put my bike out of commission.

Really all I want is someone who’s renowned for doing a good job, not just someone that will do it… If I’m paying for new wheels, I don’t want to have to worry about them for awhile.

Thanks!

Citi Bicycles. 315w 38th st, between 8th and 9th Ave.

The two main mechanics bot do very good jobs at wheelbuilding. I got my open pro-phil built up there and it’s standing up great. They are my go to LBS and will always deal with them first. Jhonathan the owner is an awesomely nice guy who gives you no shit. A++

You could also go to Trackstar, they do good wheelbuilds. Just sign up to fixed.gr/nyc and look at the giant “bike shops we love/hate” thread.

Trackstar built up a pair for me. They only charge $60 for a pair (labor only).

I was just asking the same question last weekend and after researching it on fixed.gr it looked like Citi bike was the consensus. However, I wanted to take mine to Danielle at King Kog’s new shop to keep it in the family, but they were closed when I called (surprise) so I now Brad at Trackstar is building them. They had to order my spokes, which will take a week, but I think that’s just because they were running low.

Does anyone at King Kog build wheels? They don’t even do repairs, do they?

Gina just opened a new shop, it’s on Graham and Meeker or thereabouts, I haven’t been yet. And yeah, they do repairs and builds and stuff now.

Yea, they didn’t have the space for much of anything at the old place.

King Kog opened a new shop? Will have to check it out. I’m 2 blocks away from the store on Hope St. but they never really have anything.

Hey, me too! I went in a few times but never really bought anything since the selection is small and prices not cheap. I feel bad since I want to support a lady-owned LBS. She said she closed that shop and is operating exclusively out of the new location.
