Please Tarck, I implore you, help me make all my bike decisions

Am considering trying the Ritchey Adventure fork on my NFE to try it out with lesser loads and higher trail. AC is 393mm (Ritchey) vs 387mm (NFE); offsets are 50mm (Ritchey) vs 65 (NFE). I think this changes HTA/STA from 73/73 to 72.68/72.68 and the BBD goes from 70mm to 72.6mm.

Has another NFE (or H/G) owner tried this a swap to a fork with different offset / AC numbers? Any geometry pro’s out there to tell me my maths are wrong? The popular web page for fork change geo doesn’t have a field for fork offset afaik.

Is one of the pairs of numbers swapped? Shallower HTA but bigger BB drop doesn’t make sense

I don’t have an answer but I’ve been riding my NFE a lot lately and also thinking about how it would handle (and how much lighter it would be) with a higher trail carbon fork.

I remember looking through @JUGE_FREDD’s IG account and seeing photos of his themed NFE prototype with a carbon fork (here it is) so he might have some ideas on how the geometry changes (and how it handles).

that fork is a 26" suspension-corrected model so it was also taller, slacking the HTA to 72° and raising the BB

even though that was <400g the weight of the fork is kinda irrelevant, not having the rack/bag/shit was much more in aggregate

and the feeling was somewhat offset by the slower handling

Pubes has it now

I tried that Ritchey carbon straight steerer disc fork on mine a few times and it didn’t thrill me since I had a road bike at the time.

I ran the Cinq touring fork on my Hunter Gatherer for awhile.

The bike felt significantly different, in a good way. Handling was fine, was fun to ride on and off road

But all it really did was just speed up the purchase of a dedicated skinny tire bike (Fairlight Strael), which does all of the on-road stuff better than the modified HG did.

And i missed the utility of the rack on the big tire bike. So HG is back to low trail.

But now I’m wondering if I’d like 700x38/40 more than 650x48…

Can’t stop, won’t stop.

Was supposed to get the bike today…

If they don’t hurry up and put the AC in those trucks I will be the first person to track down jimmy hoffa and and the first person to reanimate a corpse

This is kinda where I think it’s heading anyways. I’d like to leave NFE in its capsule and not mess about too much…and this fork experiment is a hassle with the dyno in the mix.

Just wanted to announce to potential Tarck travelers that every winter I’ll be living along this route if anyone wants ride a bicycle there.

Updates: sold the GT, did a 650B albatross bar Grant conversion on the Merckx, put a deposit on a Rock Lobster.

one of their sponsored riders at a cross race here had the most beautiful wildest paint i think I’ve ever seen

Any pics?

You want to borrow my truing stand let me know

I’m having CC build up the wheels. Trying to limit the number of projects I have going so I can complete more of them.

Though profoundly laid off, my RL deadline is coming up and I have to decide what to do.

Current stable is

  • Cannondale T400, same as above
  • Alien Track, same as above
  • Eddy Merckx is now a 650B townie conversion
  • Ritchey Outback Breakaway gravel travel bike
  • Moots 26" MTB

I want something of a road bike, optimized for long distances with a boxy bag. I was thinking of copying the geo and tubing style of an old French rando bike, but with modern fixings.

Being unemployed budget is more of an issue than it was for my last build. I’ll probably have to build it up over time.

Current inclination is

  • TIG welded steel frame with fender eyelets
  • Curvy fork with fender and rando rack eyelets
  • Lightest tubing possible
  • Disc brakes
  • 12mm TA
  • 142mm rear
  • 3 bottle cages
  • External routing
  • Clearance for 40s with fenders

Build would be 11s Shimano mechanical so I can share stuff between it and the Ritchey. I do have one of these forks but it’s kind of heavy and QR. I have this wheelset which will cover my expected tire sizes.

I’m looking for a bike that isn’t redundant with the Ritchey. Am I on the right track?

Cough cough.

Aside from not having a curvy fork, it’s a perfect fit!

sure but OP already is in queue with Rock Lobster and is just trying to pin down what to ask for when his number comes up, shortly
