Profile vs. Phil Wood

I actually just built a wheelset a few weeks ago, with profile hubs. I absolutely love them. So smooth and so overbuilt. I’ll post pics later today…

I dream about these bad boys. LF Phils = win!!!

They look plenty classy built up too…

i’m running a Phil HF in the rear laced to a black veep. picked up the whole wheel for $200. I am building a front wheel and would love to run a phil there to but damn those things are expensive. I’ve been considering an alien hub . . . .i just want something HF i just hate how so many of them have cutouts in them, which brings me back to the phils

Pauls, Phils and Profiles are all overkill for riding on the street and overbuilt for riding on the track. That is my opinion.

Overbuilt is not necessarily a bad thing, but if I were buying nice track hubs, I would go Dura-Ace. Less expensive, lighter (I think…could be wrong) and they look badass. I’m not buying nice track hubs, though.

well, ive got 2 sets of high flange phil wheels built to open pros which i love. problem free through everyday riding in all weather.

i am in the process of getting a set of profile hubs built to open pro ceramic rims for the land shark. ill let you know how they turn out.

ive ridden profile for years in bmx and have always loved their products. im sure they will not be a let down.

so today at 21st ave bikes i commented to my friend “i dont really like the high flange phils”

and one of the guys behind the counter said “are you drunk?”

Those LF black Phils are fucking nice. Also what are the hoops they are built to on the bike pic? I’m about to build a new bike and those would be a perfect wheel set. Albeit way, way, way, too much wheel for the frame I’m gonna use but I don’t really give a crap.

I agree with everyone on the Phil Wood. I am not a personal fan of Profile, they may be good, but they still aren’t Phil Wood. Plus…they just don’t look as “professional” to me. I don’t know…there is just something classy about Phil Wood’s hubs, I personally love them in the black.

After seeing this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFny8u4XEOs I’m a bigger fan of Phil Wood. It appears they’ve figured out how to do looseball smoothness in a cartridge bearing and charge a bit less than ceramics for it. No idea if it’ll make you faster though.

it’ll make you think you’re faster, and that counts for quite a bit.

I’m going to buy some of those carbonyte bearings.

I’m really liking the LF Phils posted above…those are my pick

yup, I usually think silver hubs look better, but those look really nice. The silver spokes balance that build out nicely.

If someone gave me an unlimited budget to build a set of wheels, and the only specification was sealed bearings, It would be a phil LF silver in the rear, and a nice sealed DA road hun up front with a track axle, both of them laced to campy atlanta 96’s.
So i guess between profile and phils, phils, if for nothing more than the better resale.

What do you mean by sealed bearings frankstoneline? Do some DA hubs come with cartridge bearings?

sealed as opposed to older looseball DA track hubs.

edit: I think DA road hubs come sealed now, but I could be wrong. My point was, I’d find a deal on a low flange, low spoke count front hub from a road bike.

Ohh ok. I got confused because people sometimes mean cartridge when they say sealed, and I was pretty sure that all higher end Shimano road hubs have labyrinthine seals. Thus a clusterfuck of logic was created in my mind.
