Have you looked through the RUSA published permanents in your area? Might find some routes that you like a bit more and would get you familiar with the format. They aren’t ACP sanctioned though so don’t qualify you for PBP on their own.
Randonneurs (randos), use metric for distances; it'll make them feel like a longer ride: rando chat‽
What I do when building up to long distances is ride a lot of 100 & 200k’s ( if you’re fast enough for a daytime 300 or 400 that works too — the idea is a day out in the country, then coming home to your own bed.) They don’t have to be rusa/acp sanctioned — it’s just getting used to riding for distance w/o getting worn down by the saddle time.
This is everything. I just don’t really stop. I’ll strategically skip bigger store stops to avoid the bottlenecking and goofing off. Drives a few friends crazy… but I’ll “get dropped” shortly before a stop and leap frog over people and snag water from a lesser know spot.
I never sit down either. Sitting down on a long ride is pretty much guaranteed to mean losing 10-30 minutes you’ll never gain back.
Sitting down off the bike, right ;-)
?
Sitting down depends on the reliability of your internal clock. Sitting down, inhaling some food, then heading on out doesn’t have to take more than 5 minutes even if you’re leisurely about it.
standing around at a stop is worse though
the general point here is to maximize the quality of the time and payoff
FTFM.
Everyone is different for sure. But as I get older I find the time it takes to get into a rhythm after a stop has gone from 2x to 3x the time of the stop itself.
ATMO get in on that drink mix game or just get very good at eating 200/250cal an hour.
I find after hour 6 on the bike u struggle to keep up my caloric intake.
This is making me want to get back into pavement riding, dammit!
Oh also don’t be afraid to go for a hydration vest. They can rly open up your day and make it so you can do long long long spurts of riding without stopping at all.
I yearn for the day I finally get a bike fit that works for me and I don’t have two small kids so I can spend an entire day on a bike
Not really rando but when doing bikepacking events, where you probably riding by yourself anyway, I try to save up the tasks so if I stop to do one thing, like take off and stow a jacket, I might oil my chain or grab some snacks or whatever, so I dont stop again later.
Hey folks
RUSA membership is $5 off this week - $25 total
