Road Pedal Recco's

Well, I’ve been using these Speedplay Light actions. They suck ass. I’ve had problems since about 3 months after I bought them, and used them for about a year. I had to send them back to speedplay because they fell apart at one point. Now the cleats are worn out so my right foot just pops out if I lift my foot up too forcefully. I am going to try and cut my losses and sell them on the Bay.

So to the point. I am in the market for some new pedals for my road bike. I would like to spend no more than $150, and get something very reliable. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I picked up some Ultegra SPD-SLs for my new ride. I love em’ so far.

SPD-SL or Keo. Can’t go wrong either way.

Keo sprint.

Shimano SPD-sl or Time RXS (not the new xen pedal because it sucks)

Both have a similar amount of rotational float and are the only two systems with any lateral float, which is often overlooked in my opinion. SPD-sl is a little easier to get into but once clipped in both give a positive feel. Shimano wins out when it comes to support with a slightly larger platform but on some stiff shoes that wont really matter. I run Time on all my bikes currently and when set at the hardest spring tension I essentially have to stomp to get clipped in and feel VERY secure doing standing starts and sprints on the track bike. The one and only time I have ever clipped out of Time by accident was when my cleats were just beat and I was procrastinating on switching them out.

For the record the XEN is supposed to be a more user friendly version of the RXS but really is just heavier, clunkier, and harder to clip into than the RXS and should be avoided.

Braden

Stab in the dark: that might be because nobody wants their foot to flop around all over the place. If you want your feet wider out, move your cleats in or get a longer BB.

You definitely cannot go wrong with Keo. I love mine.

sucks that the light actions were problematic for you. i have several sets of speedplay zeros that have been perfect. one pair has at least 30,000 miles on it without ever being rebuilt. i clipped a pedal with that set in a crit and broke part of the resin body off so i figured i’d just ride them til they failed. that was 2 seasons ago and they’re still going strong.

SPD-SL has lateral float? Definitely rotational, but I’ve never felt lateral. It that something on the newer pedals since '07? Or do you mean lateral cleat adjustment? I’ve only got the 105 model. Maybe it doesn’t have it.

Another vote for these but I’ve been riding clipless for a month so what do I know
(yes, I’ve had my mandatory tip over)

The keo sprints look pretty good. Will they be a decent track pedal in the future for me as well?

Yeah, tons of people use Keos for the track. I’d say it’s the most popular pedal at my velodrome by far.

Spd-sl and Time RXS have about 2-4mm of lateral float. This is not contrary to lofarkas this does not equate to having your foot to flop around all over the place as anyone who has actually used either of these pedal systems can attest to. I have found that in the past I have been more prone to knee pain on Look derived designs and once I switched to Time the problem went away.

I’ve been riding clipless for a long while and have never fallen over.

I’ll get back to you guys when I fall over tonight for saying that.

Damn it.

But clips & straps… forget about it… I fall over all the time. I fell over yesterday here at work in the parking lot. It ain’t right.

I’ve got some brand new Dura Ace SPD-SL that are probably going to be antiquated NOS before I can afford road shoes.

I had my Keo Sprints for ~2 years before I bought shoes on Chainlove

I just got a pair of these. Haven’t ridden them yet since I’m still shopping for pedals (leaning towards PD-R540 SPD-SL or maybe Time ATACs), but they’re really nice shoes.

Nice, but I’m looking for a 13 US or 48 EU.

idk about LONG rides, but my eggbeaters are great.

That’s my size. I ended up getting these. (Adidas Girano). List is $85. I think I got them for $55, but it was on closeout at a shop. Hell, even for $85 they’re not bad at all.
