noone said Jamis yet… so i’ll say it…
i built this whole bike up for 575 of course it needs some nicer paint but it rides good
campy c record 8 speed stuff
stowe frame he used to build for serotta and apprentice with eisentraut
you can find steel serotta frames on ebay for pretty cheap
and then try to find a deal on a donor bike for parts that you need then sell the frame
sometimes whole bikes pop up on ebay for good prices
Hells yeah.

eww gross a unicrown fork.
oh wait. my serotta has one.
a dave phinney model serotta sold on ebay for 224 plus shipping. that’s a pretty badass frame. had ugly decals though.
Looks like a flat crown to me.
what does it look like now?
Ha, why do people scoff so much at unicrown forks? I mean, they don’t look great, but jesus, I don’t look at a bike and go EWWW UNICROWN NOOOOOO. I dunno, I guess I’m just not as picky.
I would take lugged over unicrown of course, it’s just not a dealbreaker for me if I like the rest of the frame enough.
That Stowe is awesome.
i don’t really like unicrown forks
but sometimes they are ok
the one on the stowe doesn’t bother me
if i was having a frame built i would never get a unicrown fork though
i don’t care. i was being a jerk to dooktruck.
my serotta has a unicrown fork.
davidson uses unicrown and i think his frames are fucking awesome.
if its an option i choose double plate.
oh yeah original poster look its sort of mix and matched group but you can ride it
and its pretty cheap i wonder if its really tig or fillet
Definitely a mixed bag. But a good price for that. I would jump on it given it was my size.
[quote=“blackholelectron”]If you’re seriously looking at a Gunnar Roadie, those suckers are hot. I’d love to have one myself. Basically a non-lugged Waterford. The Smoothie is nice, too, that was my second suggestion but Tim stole it.

I have to second this. I absolutely love my Gunnar Roadie, it’s by far the best bike I’ve ever owned. They cost a lot new, which I’m not sure I’d pay, but they go for pennies on eBay. I bought mine, with a full-Ultegra group and $400 Shimano wheels for $700 complete, and I’ve seen quite a few go for less than that. My biggest regret is missing a 48cm Gunnar Cross-Hairs for $150 a few weeks ago. Like, I was so bummed that I lost sleep. Anyway, Gunnar is tops.
Why don’t you go used? Ebay has tons of sweet 90’s road bikes in the 1k range.
Thanks for the ideas. I’m not against buying off of ebay but I would like to ride the bike before buying. Some of those steel Kona bikes looked pretty nice. The lugged one is cool but the geo is pretty relaxed. If the Haole isn’t too expensive I might go check one out. When are they releasing the prices on the 2009 bikes? I’m not planning on buying for another month so I’ll keep checking ebay/craigslist for deals too.
Bianchi for sure.
They make solid frames with good retail, and they are opening up the 1200ish range steel road bike subsection this year quite nicely.
Or get a mercian frame and build it up…
When I was looking for a road bike recently, I looked at the stuff from Jamis as well as Bianchi. This was before the 2009s were out… pretty nice selection of Bianchi steel now, that’s nice. The Cannondale CAAD9 alternatives seemed pretty cool, too, if you wanted to go aluminum. Not sure if that is in the price range, though.
There’s always the Surly Crosscheck complete option, probably a bit heavier but they are nice riding bikes (I have one setup as a fixed gear).
Ultimately I went with a Giant TCR C3, I have an '08 (carbon) that I got for a nice discount once the '09s started coming out. The older aluminum ones are really nice, too. Decent spec and ride nicely, seemed like one of the better values in road bikes when I was doing my shopping having pretty much the same requirements as the OP.
There’s still a crown. The fork blades just fit over it and the gaps are filled in for a seamless look.

davidson uses unicrown.

yeah, internal brazed crown or something like that…
that’s actually probably what is on my serotta and dook’s stowe too.
