Singlespeed 29er Love

Looks. The way it absorbs vibration. Handling. Suspension correction.

here’s my raleigh XXIX.
i like it a lot, especially off road.
front disc, fixed with a tomicog on the back.
i might at some point shell out for the phil disc/fixed hub.

Holy awesome.

Anybody actually riding ss or fg 29ers on singletrack? I have an old 26" Monocog flight that I ride both SS and fixed. I’m tempted to replace it with a 29er, but I just not convinced that it would be an improvement. Most of the singletrack I ride is very tight and twisty and it seems to me that the larger wheels and longer wheelbase of a 29er would be a disadvantage. But I’ve never ridden a 29er, so I don’t really know. Unfortunately SS 26ers are getting rare. I don’t think Redline even makes a 26" Monocog anymore.

$279. almost as much as the bike itself.

Well yeah. Two discs and a fixed cog would be awesome for winter though.

Nice bike. How were the stock parts?

dunno, fine i guess.
i bought it used. it had a bunch of nice easton stuff on it, the brake(s) are fine, wheel’s are nice. external Bottom Bracket.
i like it a whole lot. i’m riding it for 12 hours on sunday for a charity thing, and i’m actually looking forward to it.

I would think that would be too much stopping power. When riding on slick terrain, I would probably skid out on that setup without even trying.

I’m going with the fixed cog and v-brake this winter.

What? Disc modulate better than rim brakes in all conditions, that means you can unleash the deceleration wrath of hades or feather your speed down a fraction of a MPH. Having power doesn’t mean that you will always go full throttle.

True, but I would rather use the fixed gear for speed modulation when traction is an issue. I wouldn’t use the rear brake much when riding in snow.

Ya for a winter bike just say no to Vs. Snow will get clogged up in there, so if you want to go with a brake go disc.
