I went to the IRO site earlier this morning, and configured one from their bike maker thing. For the cost ($849 before shipping), you can do a lot better. Frameset alone is $305.
Its for when I move to Philly next week - so like 1/2 mile for grocery runs.
Hell yeah a singlespeed 29er will rock for that. I rode one for the first time the other day. It was everything I wanted my 24" BMX cruiser (short errand bike I had) to be, but better.

I’m probably going to pick up a Monocog Flite, since I can EP it for pretty cheap. This will be my first mountain bike since I was like 12.
I agree with your points. But seriously, again, that fork on the IRO is anemic looking compared to the straight bladed forks on the bikes I posted.
koteigear - 29ers only need apply. I am going rigid and 26" rigid mountain bikes are brutal.
I don’t particularly care about the fork, but I think the price on the IRO, for straight-gauge steel and a bunch of generic hybrid-quality parts, (like ProMax disc brakes) is insane. A Monocog Flight costs $899 in-store, which means it’s basically the same price as the IRO after shipping. And there are a host more bikes with equivalent or better parts which sell for a whole lot less.
If Bikes Direct weren’t stupid and shipped their 29er with disc mounts, at the very least, I would probably pick up that one, and throw some discs on there when I found them cheap on eBay.
I have this 26" jump bike and the rear disc is somewhat of a challenge when removing the rear wheel due to aligning (1) the rotor (2) tires (3) chain at the same time. Interestingly, this bike has dropouts instead of track ends. (You need to have a magic chain length.)

The IRO has an EBB and is disc-only. That’s what I want. The complete bike is a ripoff, but if the frameset were $300-ish I’d do it.
This is my 07 monocog frame built up with surly & salsa wheels, truvativ cranks, avid brakes (disc front, V rear). I set up the rear disc hub with a tomicog, but I much prefer to ride this with the freewheel.
I plan to use this bike in fixed mode with studded tires when the snow and ice hit this winter.

Looks like the IRO Model 19 is finally out. I may pick one up if/when it’s offered as a frameset.

I like it except for the bend in the fork. What is the price point?
What’s wrong with a bend in the fork?
