You know, they make these things that line the whole tire and hold the air really well!
Cane Creek tubeless MTB wheels came with a one-piece moulded (plastic) rim strip that worked really well. I think they licensed it from Bontrager. The tire/strip interface was really good, and basically eliminated the need to tape off the spoke holes, etc.
Yeah Bontrager does this, itās awesome
They must have a patent on it or something
The Fattystrippers are basically big latex rubber bands.
Take a 650C tube and slice it the long way. Boom, instant rubber rim strip that is tight.
and already has valve installed!
that was the original Stanās product my dudes
flat rubber rimstrips with valves i.e. two-dimensional tubes
was the best method before they started making rims
was gonna say. I remember buying this for road. It was more expensive than tape by a good margin.
god damn it where do i get some
Thatās where I stole the suggestion. Figured itās easier to find one of those tubes laying around in a shop since no one buys them anymore.
stans still sells them.
I used some on my sscx bike with great success.
I believe I have one in my commuter now with an older dyad rim that hasnāt been an issue, either.

that is far more expensive than a 650c rubberband.
Get 26in tube
Stretch it around 700c rim partially inflated
Use scissors to split it down the middle and flay it open
Clean flayed open tire with alcohol or soap/water
Install tire
Remove valve stem core
Install sealant
Install air and seat the tire
Trim off flashing with an X-acto or razor blade
This is the OG way of doing it aka Ghetto Tubeless. Start about 4:04. This is how a lot of us were doing it in the beginning.
My first ones were, yes. I am on the new, heavier orangey ones now.
I have a ghetto 2 blessed bike. Is the og stans thinner than a tube or just⦠a tube?
OG Stanās is way thicker, designed to take up space in the rim so the tire seats more easily. You still have to use tape, though. They donāt stretch tight enough to seal and I donāt think anything actually would. Nothing that you could stretch easily by hand over the rim. But I havenāt seen the Bontrager thing, so maybe thereās some magic there?
Ghetto tubeless mostly worked because the tube came out and over the sides of the bead, doing double duty as an airtight barrier inside and taking up extra space to try to get the tire bead to fit more tightly against the rim.
So fucking glad Iām never doing another ghetto tubeless setup. Tape is really so easy and light and trouble-free that I donāt want to bother with anything else.
brilliant, yes. but that thing makes it harder to get the tire off than a wire bead gator on a matrix rim with the old milk levers. shit gets SO tight in there. never gonna burp though
The Bontrager system is pretty great and works well, but it has some drawbacks, especially if youāre using Bontrager tires. Honestly though, Mavicās new UST tubeless system is flawless and should be the universal standard, except that Mavic is dumb and probably wonāt market it correctly.
lol I just realized the Park website is using gorilla tape in their video. But then at like 3:40 they show the rim taped up with yellow Stans tape.
