I doubt the problem is that it’s too loud, it’s probably more that the tone is too high and feels uncontrollable… In that case, you could try tempering it with a ball peen hammer, as one does with cymbals. I posted about this before, and I had intended to try this on my RockBros, but never bought a hammer small enough for a rinkydink little bell. However, I’ve done it to a few cymbals over the years (and most good cymbals have some amount of hand hammering), and it helps control the tone.

I think these things are loud AF and I love it. I ding from much further away than with other bells and pedestrians have time to jump, look around, gather their dog/babby, dash to the left, then finally veer back to the right and out of the way as I pass.

Hammering to adjust the tone sounds awesome.

Yes, he did cut the bottom off. Yes, he tried to grind slots in it for no good reason and yes he screwed up the slots like a 12-year-old who got his hands on power tools for the first time and then just gave up.

I’m not proud of my work or that I even tried it. The brass is hard to drill with the drill we have here (used for plastic fenders), so I sawed a chunk off (note the flat bottom) and tried to grind slots in it, but that is a tough bell, so I quit early. It just clacks now. I understand why–there’s nowhere for the sound waves to ricochet. It’ll still work, but I won’t do this again. Got a Knog Oi bell as part of a prize. It feels so flimsy, I’m just waiting for the striker to snap. It makes the construction on my Spurcycle and Crane bells look amazing. I put it on my 2 year old son’s balance bike. He seems to like it.

Okay so I got the rockbros hammered out
I started by removing the paint (it was a silver one) with rough sand paper. This step produced the largest change in sound

And then when at it with a very fine paper

I then beat it with the hammer

I think it sounds good and looks way better too. Kind of an ugly note but it’s loud and bright.
And if anyone is having trouble with the hammer sticking on these things I just dripped a little chain lube in there and it swings better than it did out of the box

Those Knogs are worse than having no bell at all. Unless you twang the striker at just the right angle/force you basically get no sound. Looks cool, but that’s about it.

I love the stock Spurcycle bell. For riding in The People’s Republic of Boulder, there is nothing better for alerting the MUPs’ zombie walkers and riders.

I’ve seen more broken knogs than working ones. Friends bike, shopowner bike, the displays at multiple shops.

They seem to be really bad.
