ss cross wheel build options

I have some heavy/shitty wheels on my cross bike… what is a good option for light, cheap, cross wheels 135mm? spacing, ss. and maybe even tubular…

SS? lace up a cassette road hub and space it out?
I think if I was building a cross wheelset for ss/fixed, I would rock a surly hub in the rear and like, a 105 or DA road front, get an allen axle if its a big deal. Laced with DT swiss 2.0’s to something cool, I’ve always liked sunn’s. though tubbs open up your options considerably.

ss, to replace the wheels that came on my phantom uno…
I have an extra zipp303 tubular I could use for the front, but the spokes are kinda pulling through… wasnt sure if that would be an issue…

but for rear wheel, is spacing a road hub the best option? or should i get a track hub?

what cheap/light tubular rims do you suggest…

Buy some super cheap old threaded-freewheel wheels (tubulars, preferably), a BMX freewheel, redish the rear and you’re done. While not as stiff, some of the old tubular rims have weights approaching that of some super light carbon wheels of today, but you can get a pair of old tubulars on eBay for $50.

For 135mm spacing, you can lace a good SS mtb hub to some 700c rims. Don’t know much about tubular rims, but I have heard of a lot of people running Mavic Open Pro clinchers with 32mm tires for cross racing. Those are hella light.

I was wrong on the spacing… should have been thinking… its 120mm…

I have a set of deep v’s that would be ok (better than the shat I have now) but they arent machined… would this be a horrible mess to run them w/ canti’s in cross?

I dont race cross nor ride a cross bike, but if I was doing that shit I would want as much stopping power as possible.

Your pads will machine them pretty fast.

sweeeet… im doing it… i just read on rivendels site (i know) that unmachined is they way to go…

They’re talking about classic unmachined sidewalls, like those found on the low-profile box rims of yore. You’re probably talking about painted, unmachined sidewalls. If so, it’s apples and oranges.

Don’t forget the rivendell dude is a wee out of touch.

Well yeah, and it’s Rivendell. If you’re going to listen to them, you might as well buy a frame that’s 6cm too large and a stem that’s 1’ high.

dang, i didnt realize what they were talking about… oh well… im doing it anyways, i dont use brakes much… makes me ride faster.

They will probably squeal.

Braking in a cross race is shitty enough without using painted up heavy ass deep v’s. I’d suggest selling those and taking bonechilling’s advice about old tubulars. If you don’t want to do that, at least run the wheelset that came stock with the bike.

And buy some aero levers if you haven’t already.
