It’s a weird mix. Like a hike on a scenic horse trail. Some nice stuff but watch where you step.
Lots of Southpark-style politics. Everything’s stupid. Everyone else is stupid. I am snarky and therefore correct. Lol you care you’re dumb. Very Gen-X coded.
20% chance per page a thread continues in the General forum that an American flag icon-having midwest Trump voter will disrupt the conversation with a sub-80 IQ psychic grenade. Just pure unrepentantly hateful dumbfuck energy. The worst bullshit eventually gets deleted by mods.
There’s a clique of ~15-20 that have pseudo-Tarck energy that join in for a game of ‘who can keep the current inside joke going the longest’ in obvious harmless shitpost threads.
Mike Curiak shows up every once in a while to sell wheels or post his photo blog.
The forum has an AI bot that is there to ‘increase engagement’ that mostly ends up imitating someone who’s a good sport at being the butt of the joke.
Once you get beyond that, it’s like the ‘site:reddit.com’ hack for Google, for mtb stuff. The Bike Manufacturers subforums are excellent, there’s always someone with 15+ years of experience with your bike that tells you exactly what model number of dropout you need to buy that answers in <24 hours.
DQ: What “problem” does UDH “solve”? It certainly doesn’t seem Universal in any way. I don’t even understand how a dangler attaches to it. Proprietary dangler? Universal indeed!
I haven’t checked if SRAM patented the integrated hanger on the Transmission MTB danglers. SRAM’s decision to use UDH was the major push for Marino to switch.
A delrin hanger isn’t much better than one made of pot metal.
it’s universal in that it can be backwards compatible with prior “regular ass derailleur” mount, but also works with UDH specific parts
it makes a really robust derailleur attachment point and mounts the mech at a very specific point in space such that the derailleur is engineered to shift more perfectly with even less initial setup. UDH derailleurs don’t have limit screws or a b-screw adjustment. when you bolt it on, it’s in the right place in time and space to shift right. lowers the bar for the skill level of a bike mechanic, just bolt it on bro
It solves the problem of every bike manufacturer having 3 different hangers for their bikes that you will be hard-pressed to find if you break yours. Now instead of your hanger being attached via one or two small bolts you secure/screw it by the outside.
it solves the problem of derailleur hangers being the sacrificial piece of the system and bending/breaking when you have a nasty crash. instead, this dumb hunk of metal stays put and you smash your $500 fancydangler instead.
disclaimer: i have never broken a derailleur hanger and do not own any fancydanglers
The patent is on the direct mount on the Transmission derailleurs. The UDH insert to make frames backwards-compatible was a Trojan Horse to get manufacturers to start making T-type frames without them having to commit to SRAM-specific frames.
It’s certainly nicer than having 500 different hangers, but the whole thing is also quite wide. For carbon bikes you can make it look smooth but the steel framebuilders were pretty annoyed dealing with such a big chunk dropout.
An interesting thing here with the plastic hanger: As soon as the Hollowtech patent expired, SRAM released DUB, copying Shimano’s 1mm plastic top hat bushing, but using a 30mm ID bearing instead of 25mm. The bushing addresses that frame manufacturers can’t hold tolerances, and should help BB life and creaking.
Does a little plastic on the stock UDH hanger do the same thing, protecting the rear hub somewhat from rear end misalignment?
Then will the forthcoming UBM also have a little plastic in there too?
Would love a bike with a built in jamon iberico holder.
Not like the one that turns up if you google it. I want one of the things that holds it for carving, on the handlebars ideally so you can munch a bit whilst riding.
Apparently he didn’t spec the brakes, this was a completely Chapman choice. “lol he bought the other brakes and then didn’t put them on because they were ‘too heavy’
Somehow this didn’t stop him from getting Phil wood hubs”
They are 11-speed Dura Ace bar ends (SL-BSR1) that Chapman polished
If I ever wanted to do a loaded tour that involved cruising hundreds of miles in a straight line on rolling gravel roads, I know exactly which bike I wouldn’t pick.
