TAF, JA, or just WTH?

I have a set of vps on my bike. They were cheap. They work fine. I have banged them up on rocks a lot.

I sent Marley some Shimano flats and she likes them more than I did.

Chesters are good, but I find them to be a little too narrow (I wear size 11/45 shoes). Currently testing some 45NRTH, Deity, NS Bikes, and Xpedo jawns for a follow-up to my previous flat pedal roundup.

Those Shimano flats look like the previous gen saint pedals, minus some of the cool cosmetic finishing.

They’re pretty comfy pedals, but they are heavier and less grippy than the Chesters I replaced them with.

I think Shimano could wipe out the flat pedal market if wanted to. But being so conservative, they’d probably take 10 years to do so.

My current favorite flats are: Crank Bros Stamp (large), iSSI Stomp XL, and Spank Oozy Trail. That’s for actual off-road use; I have Chesters on my commuter.

The fact that Shimamo doesn’t have an XTR flat pedal by now shows just how stupidly conservative they are.

I don’t know if anyone thinks that Chesters are the absolute best pedal, but they’re certainly the best sub-$50 on the market by a wide margin.

This conversation is timely and I am grateful for it.

But lol flat pedals being the progressive track - I mean I know what you’re saying, but yano, circle of life etc.

The cirrrcleeeee of liffeeeee

Ah, the actual model i was looking for is MX30

They were sooo good as urban pedals. Nice concave shape with good surface area that swaddled my feet when wearing thin-soled indoor soccer shoes. Just enough pins to provide great grip in soggy seattle, but not shin killers. Really the only slight downside was the overall thickness.

The old Primo Meat Tenderizers are the best flat pedals, but stupid heavy and pointless for ambling around in the dirt.

Anyone tried the new Kona wah wah? I picked up a set or the composites right before I stopped riding. They’ve been great for farting around in front of the house but haven’t taken them on a real ride yet. Will report back on how they perform with 510s when the sandwich clears me to ride.

Why have we all owned a cross check instead of this?

That’s just a crosscheck with different geometry and different brazeons.

I’d rather go .7/.4/.7 if it’s 1" threaded with centre-pull brakes

Because there are like 25 of those and 250,000 Surlys…?

the quoted weights are like 3-400 grams more than any frame I have built.

I rode (and crashed) a V1 of that riding with Lukas in NY a few years ago

yes the L and XL are a crosscheck with different geometry so it did start to be a slog towards the end of the day, but it was p fun in the meantime

the lighter tubing on the S and M are probably a trap, speccing identical TT/DT makes for extra shimmy potential and less likely to plane

Got excited because it’s very cheap but the old fashioned brakes and the limited wheel options are kinda a deal breaker. If I’m going to ride a turdly buttway mass produced bike it’s going to be from black mountain or velo orange.

I have really fond memories of some primo signature pedals that were basically meat tenderizers with some material cut out. magnesium ones that spun really freely on a commuter bike.

They were so thick that half the time you’d put your foot down on the edge of the pedal and it didn’t have any inclination to flip to one of the faces, though.
