Shimano levers are thicker on the hoods and the reach isn’t as adjustable the shrams. I haven’t been on the new Shimano hoods (which look better), but I know that, for all of my various complaints about sram, the hoods on my 2010 Force group were more or less ideal for my (very small) hands. A little better than my Campy 10 hoods, though I like the lever shape of the Campy shakes more. New campy hoods are nice, but getting campy on your bike is kind of an asspain if you’re buying complete (which you should be if you can brodeal).
i’m kicking myself in the ass for not testing out 6800 hoods before i pulled the trigger. i dont know if I have smaller hands or just hold hoods weird, but way more into my old rival shakes.
JP- get another caad10 for sure
Caad10 with retro shift is the obvious answer
[quote=rando]Twin Six steel rando with discs and fender/rack mounts and room for 700x43c tires? $600 frame only, $630 paint matched fenders

ooh they put up a catalog with details: http://www.twinsix.com/assets/documents/58820-cat.indd.pdf
I like the bolted DT full housing clips and the low BB, wish the HTAs were a degree steeper tho
PF30 shell is rad for SS use, but means errybody needs an expensive BB for it not to suck
real downside is that it’s probably the usual 9/6/9 OS turdly tubing
but another way of looking at it is that it’s a much better Straggler with the same materials meeting the same constraints
Didn’t read through the whole thread… I’m sure there’s a lot of good here and this is probably redundant.
A mid to high end CX bike is made for grass crits not bombing loose gravel/dirt road descents. I love my fat tired/ traditional road geometry road bike with old school flexy box section tub rims. I can rip through gnar that has roadies on their CX bieks walking at D2R2 every year.
If I was to do it again and I think I will, It’ll have the same rims but disc braks and fender eyez. Maybe a bit more clearance.

all about that passing on the inside at warp speed life
Well, I ordered another CAAD10. I’ll be looking for some awesome wheels come spring.
I’ll also be getting sized for the Nor’wester in October sometime.
Thanks again for everyone’s input. I feel a lot more confident in my decision, and feel like I’ve made good use of my resources! Watch this spot in 6 months or so, and hopefully I’ll have put aside enough to be looking at MTBs.
Sweet.

Shoulda bought a GT Grade.
noice! I’m jeal

Bu how is she gonna do uphill stoppies in the rain?
I am officially back in California and in need of a commuter for the next 5 years. Depending on which way I go I’ll be looking at a round trip of 25-30mi and 3000ft of climbing (Bay Area Tarck: Moraga to UC Berkeley campus via canyon/pine hurst, el toyonal, or wildcat all feeding to Grizzly look like best options). I want to be able to carry laptop/lunch/change of clothes/book or two (I’ve never done the whole rack business so am not attached to front or rear load for personal preferences). Climbing/descending is fairly clustered in steep, switchbacky bits so ideally it would have disc brakes and handle reasonably well. Not attached to a specific frame material, just something that checks the boxes and will be fun to ride 30mi/day on. I can store it at BART or secure locker on campus so can be somewhat nice, but I’d prefer to stay below 2-2.5 bongs all said and done.
If you’ve seen my bikes you know I tend to run a lot of drop due to long legs/arms combo. Most of my frames are aggro 58s but a lot of the touring/commute frames look to be pretty tall/short for my lanky self.
I don’t have a good sense of what the smaller brands are doing, but something like the DB Haanjo seems like it would work (trail version has Ultegra/r685, tubeless rims, and could be had for under $1500 w/o rack).
What would tarck do?

You mean bike locker at Bart right? Because everything gets stolen there
Didn’t fuck with the rear rack/pannier thing much, and I have the low trail front load deal now, which I like but my very occasional commute is flat (just the little climb up the hill I’m on)
Also, you’re renting out in moraga now?
Previously had a cg, looking to go in a different direction. Not a huge fan of the way the grade looks, which unfortunately plays a role in the decision. I started looking at the various Gunnar options but had no idea there were so many.
I mean either 1) the bikelink e-lockers on campus (I think there are also some university-sponsored ones as well) or 2) the group parking storefront on Shattuck. Though after getting into the shared office today there might be enough space left over once we all settle that I could potentially just haul my bike up there (assuming folks in my cohort don’t mind). Any other lockup ideas? It won’t really save me much time to bart in and bike commuting would save me a healthy chunk of change and allow me to get in exercise (and hopefully maintain some fitness in case I try to do some racing this year).
I’m in Lafayette for the next couple weeks, then will be moving into a condo in Moraga

Is there a good option for locking a semi-nice bike at Cal or around downtown Berkeley? Besides taking a bike into your office/lab/whatever, I can’t think of any place where it wouldn’t get parts yanked off of it.
-
Most of the commuters I see on Wildcat / Canyon / Pinehurst etc are on road bikes in lycra carrying small backpacks. Maybe Bart in from Lafayette once a week to stock up on office clothes and buy an 11" Macbook Air? Schlepping a load up and down 1000’ vertical of hillside switchbacks every day just doesn’t sound fun to me, but what do I know.

I’m not sure where in Moraga you are, but I’d probably go Old San Pablo Dam Road to Wildcat to Shasta to Grizzly Peak, and then take Euclid straight to Cal or Marin straight to warp speed (20% avg grade?). Canyon to Pinehurst to Skyline to Grizzly Peak would be the scenic route, for sure.
that’s a great price, prodeal?
When are you moving to Moraga?
Look at Felt V85 with stem slammed and negative? It’s a goddamned commuter. We (Sports Basement) have the 105/spyre builds priced at 1200 because Felt was retarded and the new west coast sales rep (ex Specialized sales bro) decided to take Felt to Mikes Bikes…
Takes a rear rack, comes with 33c clements and is actually pretty rad for commuting/dick around/road+dirt rides.
