to mr tuffy or not to mr tuffy?

i get flats, like, every other day. it pisses me off. i’ve heard people talk shit on mr tuffys but i think i might try them. am i mistaken?

also, i’ve thought of making tire liners from old tubes.

only if I’m drunk

uh. just get some gatorskinz.

I run Hutchinson in the front, Gatorskin in the back with no Mr. Tuffy. No flats as of yet. I’ll try it when I catch a flat though, whenever that is.

what tires do you have? If i were getting flats that often i would just get new tires.

This may sound stupid but inspect your tires for tiny pieces of glass. Sometimes I’ll dig out like half a dozen of them, all waiting to give me a flat.

A lot of messengers I know swear by Mr Tuffys, but most of them still get flats. I like the ride of fancy tires, so I don’t really believe in sticking anything in them that’ll make them heavier and not roll as well. The difference may very well be negligible but I’ve never felt compelled to dish out the cash to find out.

Are you telling me you’ve never had a flat tire?

With this set up? Not yet. I’ve had the Hutch on the front 3 months and the Gatorskin on the back 2 months. I don’t do much to avoid glass either. I just make sure my tires are pumped up. I usually pump my tires to 120psi every two-three weeks. I never check to see what they are down to though. When things feel sluggish, I do the finger check and pump back up.

Also, the guys getting flats with Mr Tuffy are probably getting them from the Mr Tuffy. If it’s not in there correctly it can pinch the tube somehow.

I do this at least once a week.

I’ve never got a flat with bontrager hardcases

I used them years ago and they weren’t too bad, they’ll feel similar to a thicker tire in the 28-30 range with big tread like a Schwalbe Marathon.

i’m telling you

-take an old tire that you’ve skidded through or the sides got messed up or something. an old tire.
-cut off the bead
-take said cut up tire and line another tire with it. you have to work it in there but it will fit as long as they’re at least the same size. line it in a newer tire of course.

you get the beefiest indestructible tire that you can do ANYTHING to. like a turducken, i call it a tireducken. it’s a great way to recycle old skidded to the threads tires if you just double them up at different points. impenetrable, solid, cost effective

i was running on like 80 psi one day because i just went out the house and didn’t air up after sitting my bike for a few days and i dropped off a foot high curb and it didn’t pinch out. i heard the ‘clang’ but it was still rolling. usually at 80psi if i come up a fucking driveway the wrong way it PTSSSS’s on me.

it’s worth a try if you got a bunch sitting around. i found some gatorskins in the trashcan at work and gave it a shot.

Oh.

I tend to think they’re smart enough to properly install a tube, or at least recognize a pinch from a puncture.

I find it’s pretty hard to form an opinion on what works by induction. Sometimes I’ll go 3000k without a flat only to get two within a few hours of each other. I guess that’s the nature of randomness.

I dunno who this guy is, but I like ‘tireducken.’

I have been running them for years for commuting. They definitely affect ride quality and of course add a little weight. Otherwise they work pretty damn well.

I did get a flat from a 3 inch nail getting stuck in my tire last week. Not much that can be done against something like that.

A common complaint with this is that they cause flats. I think this is bullshit, unless the tire isn’t properly inflated or the tube/tire is improperly installed.

I’ve tried them…they do reduce the number of flats if you are running shitty tires. But they don’t roll worth a damn. Get new decent tires.

i’ve been using continental ultras since late july, riding everyday (with the exception of the last two weeks) and I have yet to get a flat.
it’s kinda wtf but kinda tight at the same time

It depends on the application. For commuting a short distance year-round reducing the number of flats trumps performance. Fuck if I’m going to spend any more time fixing my shit in a downpour than I have too. If I have to put out a tiny bit of extra effort riding, that’s fine.

The only times I get flats are from pinch flats. Thus, I only worry about keeping my tire pressure up (usually 120 psi). If it’s something like running over a razor blade, I’m not sure you can do anything to help. I think it depends on the kind of debris in your area.

i’m going to throw my support to the tireducken idea.
