track and street build up

This sounds scary.[/quote]

It isn’t so bad. Worst case, you drill out all the threads and use a regular chain ring bolt.

What about having a dedicated track bike AND a street/beater bike?

Buy a proper track bike, not some street brand. The high bottom bracket is important.

For cranks and BB, anything that is designed for track is fine. Ie 144 BCD.

You probably will be swapping chainrings with other racers in the beginning, so make sure the your drivetrain is 1/8th sizing.

For cranks, a good tip is to super glue the female side of the chainring bolt into the spider, so they don’t fall out when you change rings.

Finally, if you have a bit of money buy a decent tubular wheelset. Much nicer. Do not use a lockring.

If you don’t have much money, buy clincher, but have the rear hub fixed/fixed or fixed/free. Keep one side lockringed with your street cog, and the other side with your track cog which you can easily swap over. Buy a good, long handled chainwhip. That will save you a lot of hassle.
