Surly Troll Frame size XL version 1 so it’s made for 26” wheels although 29 will clear. some scarring on drive side chain stay from chain suck. Rivnuts added to fork for extra bottle capacity since I used a frame bag on it. Make an offer
Ever feel weird about the rivnuts in the fork? Assuming they held up and you didn’t die due to fork failure…
I am strongly considering doing the same, but just one per side for a rack. It’s a CrMo rigid MTB fork.
I know the default is to say “don’t do that, you will die / stress risers” but if done properly, I don’t see how it would be that bad, especially if the bike isn’t ridden hard. I see lots of mixed messages that range from “absoultely not” up to this article fully showing how to do it and claiming they rode the bike “thousands of miles” with no issues: Rivnut Bottle Cage Mounts, Installation and Test - BIKEPACKING.com, and it seems like this is a reputable bike blerg.
My '86 Pista has rivnuts in the downtube for a bottle cage, and that bike hasn’t busted after my 18 years of owning it and somewhat hard riding/abuse during some periods (messed in the '10s) so I’m not really scared, but the internet is making me second-guess it!
I think the most weight the rack would ever have on it is a 12-pack.
The other conundrum is that the rack (the “Coffee Rack” from EdSen in Indonesia) came with M6 bolts, which is weird to me since most things tend to be M5.
I’ve never had a rack before or even a bike that had eyelets or whatever for a rack, but research says that M5 is the standard, so I’m planning on using M5 rivnuts and washers because drilling for an M6 rivnut is kind of a large hole, and the fact that most bolt-on bike things are also M5.
